Hi David,
Great letter.
I have a joke that maybe ex R.C.s would appreciate:  I think it's important for gays to marry or otherwise they would be living in sin..

I also Have a comment on why the R.C. church is so opposed:  It will descimate  the priesthood!!

I read, with great interest, the debate swirling around the issue of marriage equality in Delaware. It's obvious the only opposition to the issue came from religion. Those opposed to the measure cited scripture, words written thousands of years ago during a time of fear and ignorance of the natural world, in justification of their position. What especially raised my ire was a Delaware Voice column authored by 28 presumably educated heterosexual men. These religious leaders used the Bible as their defense, a book based on myths and parables that should have no bearing on modern life.

Religion has obstructed human progress for centuries. Copernicus and Galileo defied church authority by suggesting Earth was not the center of the universe. Galilieo was forced to recant and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Africans remained in bondage due to Old and New Testament passages. Women were denied equality for the same reasons. Darwin was villified for his observations that life wasn't spontaneously created 6,000 years ago but, rather, evolved from earlier forms over an immense span of time. Despite religious oppostion, another biblical obstacle was breached when Gov. Markell signed marriage equality into law. What will it take for people to realize the fallacy of their beliefs?

Without reliance on the myths and parables of the Bible, I challenge readers of this letter, especiallyreligious leaders, to examine their beliefs and convictions objectivelyand publicly explain their belief in God, again by looking at their beliefs/convictions objectively without relying on the Bible. In another words, looking in from outside.
