McMenamins Kennedy School
5736 Northeast 33rd Avenue Portland, OR (map)
Anybody interested in another meetup for mid- or late-January? If so, sound off and we'll figure out a date/place. Maybe somewhere in Oregon City or Hillsboro for those people who live out of the city and couldn't make the first meetup?
What about a central location like Beaverton?
Beaverton's not really central! It's way out west for those of us east of the river.
I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone who comes tonight!
Is it at the restaurant? Or one of the bars?
Kathie, I checked the forum, it is at the restaurant. And hey James, I am coming after all! Marci Degman
Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. I plan on getting there at 7:00. We have tables reserved at 8:00, but anybody arriving early can look for me at the bar; I'll have a name-tag on.
Who's bringing the boxing gloves? :-)
I can't make this one, but look forward to hearing about it. I'm way out in the boonies, so...
I can't make it on Thursdays, but I'm up for a future meeting on a Monday or Wednesday
Someone please report on how it went for those of us who missed out this time.
Will do. I'm not sure how often DS will actually push for "official" meetups like this one, but with so many Portland area writers/editors/filmmakers, we definitely need to do it again regardless.
TIME CHANGE: we are back to the original 8:00 time. Kennedy School couldn't accommodate this many people at 7:00 on Thursday.
I may miss this then because I have somewhere to be by 9:00, but please keep me on the thread for future meets.
Okay. I am still planning on swinging in close to 7:00, so feel free to stop by earlier if you can make it for a little bit. I am sure some people may not get the new details and they may still show up at 7:00, so I want to hang there earlier to greet those people. There is a bar for us to sit at until 8:00.
Sorry for the last minute details. I reserved space at Kennedy School a little while ago, and never updated here! Just so you know, they only allow reservations for 20 or fewer. Even with 22 RSVPs, 1 of those people said she couldn't make it, and Amy Mason Doan is signed up twice, so we have exactly 20 people right now. That said, there is a bar right by the tables, so if anybody wants to bring spouses, some people can sit there and we should be okay.
Hey, James, you might want to put this on the DMS general forum MeetUp thread if you haven't done so already. There are a whole bunch of us in the PDX area. Also, do we have particular space at Kennedy School?
Thanks for reminding me! I reserved some space at the resturaunt a little while ago, and I forgot to update the details here!
Also, I posted the meeting in the DMS forum a while ago, but I just started a new thread today with all the updated details for anybody on the forums who is interested.
I doubt there is official DS stance on this, so as the meetup "organizer," I'll be the first to say that it'd be okay (maybe even encouraged) if anybody wants to bring a spouse, significant other, etc. I am sure we won't talk shop the entire time! If anybody has any major objections to that, speak now or forever hold your peace.
Is this still on? Just noticed it today. I'm one of the dreaded writers ...
Looking forward to meeting with all you guys.
Also if anyone needs a ride I live in SE pdx near Mall 205.
It sounds like the original Thursday, December 16th date is best for most people. If anybody can NOT make a Thursday meeting, please reply directly underneath this discussion thread. Otherwise, we'll tentatively shoot for that date.
I have an ongoing seminar on Thursday evenings for approx. the next 3 months, so can't make it this time.
In the Oregon City meetup space, I suggested Highland Stillhouse in Oregon City. Largest selection of single malt whiskey in PDX area, minors can be there until 10 pm, good Scottish pub food. OC is going to merge with PDX. I know it's a bit of a drive but you want to know about this place. It's a gem.
I hope we have semi-regular meetings over the coming months, and we can definitely make one of them in Oregon City (maybe even the first one?). We just need to make sure we get a carpool thread started, because with Portland's great public transit, I'm sure there are others like me who don't own a car.
I'm on the "no car" team.
I think the first meeting will be in the city. Then we can maybe do an Oregon City meetup next time. After the first meeting, hopefully we'll get to know the DS group well enough that we can arrange carpools out to Oregon City easier.
Lastly, for us city dwellers who use Trimet public transit (myself included) the 73 bus goes right past Kennedy School. But for out-of-towners who don't have this option, reply directly to this thread if you're interested in getting a carpool going.
As for the location, it sounds like the Kennedy School is the preferred site for our first meetup. If anybody is absolutely opposed to this location, reply directly to this thread. Bearing in mind that we'll compromise and try out different locations for any future meetings (especially since a few people will be coming in from Oregon City or other out-of-city locations).
Monday won't work for me that week, but the rest of the week is fine.
Hi everybody- I would love to meet other local DMS people. I live in SE. Kennedy School is great for me. Mon or Thurs is good.
Oops, not Monday that week.
thursday is a possibility for me, but not my best day. Mon or Wed would work better for me.
Mondays are out for me. Other days are fine.
Thursday works. Can't do Mondays.
Hi. I'm in NE so I was going to root for something like KennedySchool. Where does everyone else live?AmyCE
I concur with the kennedy school.
Kennedy School would be great.
Thursday night is fine for me but Wednesday can work, too
I can't do Thursdays; I live in NE Portland. I used to write for DMS and am about to start doing it again.
I'm a filmmaker in Vancouver, to answer the question. :)
cool..glad I'm not the only one :)
any of you guys filmmakers? or is it all writers here
I'm a writer for DS. I worked on a short film for a production company back when I used to live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2007...but beyond that brief experience, I haven't done much film.
I'm a "Calories in XYZ" article factory. AKA a "writer."
Oh, and being old and all, could we start at 7 pm?
7:00 sounds like a much better plan.
I signed up as the organizer, and it automatically creates the first meetup. December 16th is the default date for all DMS meetups.
I'll change the date later, once we get more members and see when people are available. If anybody else wants to help organize, there's a little button near each person's name, and I can click it to give you administrative control over the meetup.
I'd love to help with organization. Any thoughts on a meeting place?
