Renoir - Chez Artiste, 3:45pm

This week's special Saturday Matinee will be "Renoir".

We will meet at the Chez Artiste theater at 3:45pm for the 4:00pm showtime.

"Set on the French Riviera in 1915, writer/director Gilles Bourdos' lushly atmospheric drama Renoirtells the story of celebrated Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet), in declining health at age 74, and his middle son Jean (Vincent Rottiers), who returns home to convalescence after being wounded in World War I. The elder Renoir is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy when a young girl, Andrée (Christa Théret), miraculously enters his world. Blazing with life, she will become his last model, and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. At the same time, Jean also falls under the spell of the free-spirited Andrée. Their beautiful home and majestic countryside reverberate with familial intrigue, as both Renoirs become smitten with the enchanting and headstrong young muse. Renoir locates a fascinating moment of change, one century's way of thinking giving way to the next, and the passing of the torch from a great painter to the great filmmaker of such classics as Grand Illusion and Rules of the Game."

I may be able to attend but injured my back on Wed. and have been barely and sporatically moving...so don't expect me but I still may try to come.

To those folks on the wait list (Christine, Chanil, and Sung), there really is no wait list for our films. It's a movie theater, and the only "capacity" is what the theater holds. Come on down and join us.

Yes, especially since we can count on 5 or 6 no shows per meetup. Which is totally fine, just try to update your RSVP prior to the film (all members) as a courtesy to the host!

Oh, how I love Pierre's paintings. When the Phillips collection came to the Denver Art Museum years ago, it featured what became one of my favorite paintings: The Luncheon of Boating Party. It's the image on my computer desktop. What's really cool is, my family has a connection to the Renoirs. Son Jean directed my cousin, Estelle Taylor, in the film "The Southerner." Estelle was one of the few actors to make the leap from silent to sound films, and "The Southerner" is a good one. Here's an image of the Luncheon. What amazed me was the size of the painting. It's about 10 ft high and about 20 ft wide. The people in the painting are rendered almost life sized. http://www.googleartproject.com/collection/the-phillips-collection/artwork/luncheon-of-the-boating-party-pierre-auguste-renoir/27809095/

Bob that's really interesting information. Have you read Vreeland's book on the painting by the same name? She talks about how it came to be, which of Renoir's friends are there and what was going on in their lives at the time. It tells a whole story behind the painting and was delightful to read. Of course, it's historical fiction, so there are some liberties taken with the story.

Has Renoir been chosen as both the Thursday night and the Saturday matinee?

    May 8, 2013

    • Richard S

Hi, Brenda. Yes it looks that way! Voters chose Renoir for Thursday as well as Saturday so just choose the day that's most suitable for you and enjoy the show.

Yes, we'll be doing Renoir both days. I know that's a little odd, but 1) it's the only film I really liked, and 2) many people who won't be able to come Thursday will be able to join us on Saturday.

We'll see how this works out this time. :)

I like the idea of Gatsby over the long weekend, Bob!

Okay, here's my idea for Gatsby. I figure the film will still be everywhere during the Memorial Day weekend. I was thinking of scheduling Gatsby, complete with suits, dresses, and a trip to a place like Dazzle for that Sunday. Too often, folks have tons of obligations in the morning following one of our films and must go home directly after the film ends. I thought it would be fun to use the three-day weekend to encourage folks to go out after and mix. Why Sunday? The film is less likely to sell out, folks will be in less of a hurry to get home, and a club is less likely to be crowded (or have a crazy cover charge). I'm going to post this message on our discussion forum, too. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Also, that doesn't mean we won't do something this Saturday. That event is still being led by Jawaid, and it would be rude of me to jump in here.

Great... so... Jawaid, what class of tickets should we plan to buy (3D or 2D) and for which showing?

Jawaid is the event host for this one. Jawaid, what do you think? Suits, dresses, Gatsby, followed by Dazzle or some such place?

I just called the Landmark Greenwood Village to get showtimes on The Great Gatsby: Saturday, May 11: 3:30pm for the 3D showing and 2:00 and 5:00pm for the 2D showings.

Great suggestion. I'm too new to Denver to know the clubs, but wish I could help. Sounds like a lot fun.

Suggestion. The Great Gatsby @Landmark Greenwood Village. Suits and dresses, followed by a nightclub. Anybody know of a period club? If not, there's always the Pec for jazz.
