Canceled due to rain/snow!Jenn's Deer Creek FRIENDLY for all Levels Hill Climb

Hi all!

Half of you don't even need me to write anything up-so, for the folks who have done this in the past....same goes...same meeting place, same concept of meeting and being ready to ride by 5:45 (and, yes, I will still probably be the last one there;) (see info on Potlucks below, too)

For everyone else, for whom this is new-

Here goes-it is roughly an 18 mile roundtrip ride for which half of it (the first half) is a steady, gradual, uphill climb. Then, the second half, is a return trip back down the same hill we rode up and back to our cars.

It is truly good for all levels-fast, slow...because, the format of any "out and back" ride that I lead, is to welcome everyone.

All speeds and abilities are welcome (those of you who did this for the first time, can chime in if you had the same fears that so many others have...and tell folks that it really is friendly and we look out for one another) The group quickly segments and everyone rides at THEIR own pace. That is the only way anyone will have fun-otherwise, one person is just dying from going too fast and feeling like they are holding someone else up...and that isn't the case. The goal is just to go as far as you personally want to go up the hill....anyone can turn around whenever they have just 'had enough' (and even faster riders sometimes have days like those:) I know I do.

Also, with it being "out and back" it is super hard to get lost:)

Other notables, there are two official portapotties along the way (hold your breath)-no real place to get water though, so bring enough (and certainly, some fuel, just in case)

It can be quite cold on the descent. When the sun goes down in the canyon, the temperature drops. Fast! Better to have long fingered gloves and a jacket and to not need them, than to need them and not have them...don't have long fingered gloves, I have tons. Let me know in advance and I will let you borrow a pair.

POTLUCKS! So, once a month, on the THIRD Tuesday of that month, we have a post ride Potluck that has been working out amazingly well. We have it on the side of the road where we park and have a casual, bring whatever you want, bring camp chairs, bring a table if you have one, any other helpful "picnic supplies"...those are definitely a fun night to look forward to! If you want to help me with being a "Potluck setter upper of tables, etc" that is always welcome!

Is that a "feels like" or actual temperature of 43 degrees? I'll check back for your decision this afternoon.

I didn't bring my bike because someone said the ride was cancelled... I guess I'm out till next week.

    April 2, 2013

  • Frank S.

    I'll be there next week.

    April 2, 2013

  • Jenn S.

Someone who works or lives at deer creek (tom v?) please text me at[masked] to say what roads are like over there at 4;30?

    April 2, 2013

    • Tom

      You got it

      April 2, 2013

    • Jenn S.

Cool, thanks tom...I am also considering temperature as a "go or no go" factor for the ride...thinking if it is 43 or less at start, to also cancel-it would be pretty darn cold coming back down and, not so much fun! So let me know the chilly factor, too:))

  • John W.

Hi. this is my first ride with the Denver Club.

    April 2, 2013

  • Jenn S.

Morning all! My laptop has died (getting replacement today from office) so just posting thru iPhone-if the roads are wet at 4:30 pm, we will cancel ride until next week. I know a lot of you leave work early and drive a distance to attend-so want to give enough notice!

    April 2, 2013

  • LindaHD

Looks like next week for me given the iffy weather.

    April 2, 2013

  • Cathy

    Poor weather.

    April 1, 2013

  • David

Jenn has requested this update that if it's raining/snowing at the time of the meet up then the ride will be postponed till next week. No, this is not an April Fools joke!

    • Todd S.

It's snowing heavy now, rise canceled be safe

      April 1, 2013

    • Candice

Todd, you mean the riDe is canceled? Just want to confirm before I start gathering all my gear for tomorrow.\

      April 1, 2013

  • Scott

I have to pick up kidos. I'll try and make the next one.

    April 1, 2013

  • Keith G

    Bailing due to forecast.

    April 1, 2013

  • Ken H.

Had to make it 50. I will be there to help slower riders not feel slow. In spite of training in the basement about 10 lbs managed to sneak back into my life. They have to go. Be good to get back to Tuesdays.

  • Larry

I am also considering changing my rear cassette from 11-25 to 11-28 so I have an easier granny gear!

    March 28, 2013

    • Larry

I had Performance Bikes swap it out Friday, works fine, did a 60 mile ride Saturday but no huge hills!

      April 1, 2013

      glad to hear it.

    April 1, 2013

  • Larry

going to wait a couple weeks for warmer weather!

    March 29, 2013

  • Larry

I was considering riding and starting earlier, being slow and 200+ lbs and letting the good riders catch me halfway up the hill.

    March 28, 2013

  • Jenn S.

Hi Rachel! I think the majority (including me) may have limited riding time in (unless spin bike counts?) so, no worries on "hanging!" Let's just have fun no matter what speed:)

    March 28, 2013

  • Rachel

Have only been on one ride this year. Happy to give this a shot and see if I can hang!

might be on my hybrid; am buying a road bike w/in the next few weeks...

    March 22, 2013

    • Jenn S.

Hybrids are fine! Yes, you will be working harder than others if you are on a heavier bike...but, it doesn't matter...not a race and just for fun..if anything, people will look at you and say, "dang, I am cheating because I am not on a hybrid!"

      March 24, 2013

    • Chris H

Do, I usually ride my mountain bike on Deer Creek, so you won't be the only one not riding a road bike.

      March 26, 2013

  • Carol G.

looking forward to getting on the bike!

    March 26, 2013

Waiting for the weather to warm up. Next week!

Sorry, no Tuesday rides for me until after ski season. Then I look forward to riding with you all!

    March 22, 2013

  • Jenn S.

Diane D! I have often thought of that...but, how do we eliminate the cost per vehicle to get into Chatfield? That is the biggest "hindrance" (not even that...I just know that some folks won't come if they have to pay to get in)! We have done "big" picnics (didn't do last year though) where I rented a big pavillion at Bellevue Park-I am certainly game to give it a try at Chatfield though! Will you gather details for me in terms of "do we need to reserve?" Jenn:)

    March 22, 2013

    • David R

Jenn...the folks that don't want to pay entry to Chatfield could park at Deer Creek and ride their bikes over. :-)

      March 22, 2013

  • Frank S.

Guaranteed to be pokey. Overgrown and participant of Operation Goobegone and recovering from a hernia surgery.

    March 22, 2013

  • Jenn S.

Very true, Larry....if you don't have long finger gloves, just bring any ole pair of mittens and a ski hand heater pack....stick the hand heaters in the gloves for the descent. Can work in a pinch:)

    March 22, 2013

  • Denise T.

Oh, on Tuesdays? So I guess you will no longer be at Kim's spin class at Highlands Ranch? We never met but I thought I knew who you were. I will catch you on another day. Have fun.

    March 22, 2013

  • LindaHD

Tentative, may have to go out of town for work

    March 22, 2013

  • Greg B

I really wish I could but my Boulder Cycling Club also rides Tuesday nights. Hopefully I'll get to ride with this group soon.

    March 21, 2013

  • Larry

Have to make sure you dress or have winter stuff in your back pack for the ride down, because when that sun drops behind that mountain and you are coming down at 20-30 mph it really has a drastic wind chill. I remember shivering a lot and turning blue the last time I did that in the fall!

  • Menelaos

    Good times!
