Golden area weekly rides

I thought some folk might be interested in a series of rides out of Golden.  These rides will be Thursday evenings through May and switch to Wednesday eves after the KHMTT series at Cherry Cr.  My rides involve rehydration (AKA beer) at the end.

Week 1, May 2, South Table Mtn. - short 11 miler:

Sorry, May 9th I'm going to Zak Brown at Red Rocks, so:

Week 2, May 16, North Table Mtn.- 16 mile with more open road than last week.

Week 3, May 23 Lookout Mtn.  OK you bikers, its a front range classic!  Check it out at: and turn on the elevation profile.

Week 4, May 30 - Golden Gate Canyon, White Ranch Park.  Ditch the traffic in Golden Gate Canyon after 5 miles, then head up to White Ranch Park.  Much less traffic and very pretty this time of year.  We ride until the road turns to "dirt", then turn around.  About 2400 ft of climbing in 10 miles.  Bring tail-light just in case.  See details at:

Week 5, June 5, Lookout Mtn. (switch to Wed.) Mt. Vernon CC, Genesee, Paradise Hill.  Great Front Range classic:

Week 6, June 12, Lookout Mtn, Grapevine, Bear Cr., Red Rocks, moving a bit south.  This ride is ~27 miles, with 2500 ft of climbing.  About 2 miles of well packed dirt from mile 13 to 15.  Count on 2 hours of continuous riding, and bring a head and tail-light just in case.  The short climb through red rocks is STEEP.  If we have enough people, we may split into 2 groups, one that skips the south portion at mile 11.5  and just rides down US 40.  Beer at the end!  Map details:

Week 7, June 20.  Wonder why we have been doing all that climbing?  6th annual Echo Lake to Mt. Evans Summit Solstice ride.  Posted separately. Meet at Echo Lake Lot at base of ride at 3:45 and ride by 4.  Pie and something warm at Echo Lake Lodge at the finish!  Only 14 miles up!  Check your brakes for the decent! Oh, about O2, roughly 60% of sea level at the summit, 75% compared with Golden.  You will notice this...

Week 8, June 26.  We are all feeling pretty strong right?  Repeat of June 12 ride above, or possibly a longer ride that includes Kerr Gulch into Kitridge (and avoids the dirt). Leave PROMPTLY at 5:45.  Bring tail-light and headlight just in case.

Independence or close enough, July 3.  How 'bout Lookout Mtn., Mt. Vernon, Genesee Park, through the back side of Genesee, down 40 and back?  Gorgeous ride!  We saw lots of elk 2 years ago.  2500+ feet of climbing in about 25 miles.  Check it out:

Week 10, July 10, Rooney, Dinosaur ridge, Morrison, Red Rocks and back to Golden.  About 18 miles and 1200 ft of climbing.  See map for details: ; Bring tail-light just in case.  Dark by 8:15.  Beer at the end of this rainbow.

I won't cancel rides due to rain without first checking radar maps, etc. and will send out email to people signed up for ride ~ 1 hr before, if the weather looks dicey.  Or you can call:

three o three - 4 two three - 2 five 7 four

FYI, regarding dirt on your route today you can miss the dirt by riding through the shopping center. The road is good, they are used to cyclists (I ride there all the time on my lunch rides) and you end up on S Golden Road right near the Outback. Just turn left onto Denver West Blvd then right onto Cole Blvd after you go over I-70 and before you reach Colfax, go through the shopping center turn right onto Old Golden Road and you are all set. Also East Street is a good alternative to Ford if the traffic on Ford is heavy, just a lot of stop signs and a few speed bumps along the way.

I am going to try and catch some of your rides later this season. Down with a stomach bug right now so not even any trainer time for me.

I work near Medved Chevy so if I get off work in time, I can make Golden. That if is a big IF; my job is done when the job is done and that is a variable. If I am not there when I say I will be, I am not flaky; my schedule is just inconsistent.

If I get off of work, I will plan on it since work is nearby. If I am not there, it is most likely because of work.
