Ride for Reading Book Delivery

Help Naked Womens Racing team deliver books to children!

RSVP here:

http://rideforreading.eventbrite.com/#

*The tentative plan is to meet at the Denver 9 News Station and then ride our bikes to Smith Elementary School (with books in tow). Stay tuend for updated details on start address. Bring a backpack and/ or bike trailer!

What: Colorado-based women’s competitive cycling team Naked Women’s Racing will deliver thousands of donated children’s books by bicycle to Smith Elementary School Friday, May 10 for National Ride for Reading Week. Naked Women’s Racing partnered with the charity Ride for Reading, a non-profit with a mission to promote literacy and healthy living through the distribution of books via bicycle to children from low-income neighborhoods.

When: Delivery takes place Friday, May 10 from 8:15 am to 12 pm. We are collecting donations of books and/or cash donations for Ride for Reading from now until delivery date!

Why: In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books per child is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Reading is an integral part of education, and without books it is hard to build a strong academic base. Our children need materials to read at home and it is our goal to provide the means. And in the process, we can fight childhood obesity and nature deficit disorder through the power of cycling, too! Exercise the mind and body and lead through example.

Where: Smith Elementary School located at 3590 Jasmine Street Denver, CO 80207 Meeting Location: TBD Bike Route: It will be doable by any person of any fitness level on any bike - we assure you, so please join us!

I plan on riding down the cherry creek trail some afterwards so I think I'll wear street clothes over my biker shorts and bring the road bike. Hoping to make it to cherry creek reservoir and back.

I was planning on riding my cruiser. Think that will be ok?

I think it should be fine, as long as yuo can ride about 15 miles or so on yuor cruiser. It's 6.9 miles to the school from the news station (and then back, of course). There's probably going to be another drop-off after the first school to donate extra books - for those interested.

Do you have to be a woman to do this?

Just curious, is the majority of the riders going to in biker clothes?

      May 8, 2013

    • Cathy

The Naked members will be wearing their kits, but I don't know what other folks will wear. The ride isn't very long - maybe ten miles round trip, at a slow pace. If you're working after I'd guess that non-cycling clothing would be fine! See you bright and early tomorrow.

Please note that we cannot park in the news station's parking lot. Plan on arriving by bike or parking on the nearby neighborhood streets. Thanks. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Most likely I can make this, I just need to get my trailer serviced :)

    April 26, 2013

  • Jason V.

If anyone has a trailer they'd be willing to let me borrow, I'll have no problem loading it up and totin' it around. If not, I have backpacks.
