With increasing unemployment, more people are taking the plunge into the waters of small business ownership and entrepreneurship. We all make mistakes when starting out in business, so wouldn't you like to avoid some of the more common ones?

This month, our speakers will be Irv Ruppel and Bob Douthitt who are Business Counselors with the Denver Chapter of SCORE (http://www.scoredenve...). SCORE, Counselors To America's Small Business, is an Association with 370 chapters and 800 branches nationwide. The Denver Chapter provides free small business counseling and low cost training and education focused on small business ownership.

Irv and Bob will talk about some of the more common mistakes made by small business people. More importantly, they'll discuss ways to avoid making those common mistakes.

After we hear from Irv and Bob, we'll have time to troubleshoot specific problems that members may have.

Of course, we'll also have plenty of time for networking. Early networking starts at 6:30 PM. We'll also have time to network after the brainstorming session.

Our Speakers:

Irv Ruppel has been very active in the Denver small business community; he was a very successful small business owner for over 50 years. He has worked with small business owners from start-up through mature phases, including buy-outs. He has also been a facilitator for the Dale Carnegie Courses. Irv is an accomplished presentor and he enjoys helping others achieve their business goals and personal dreams.

Bob Douthitt owns his own successful small business. He balances the challenges of managing and growing his own business, his family life and helping other small business owners by volunteering in SCORE. Bob enjoys helping prospective small business people through the beginning stages of the start-up process. He also works with owners of existing small businesses to help them make critical operating and marketing decisions as their businesses grow and mature.
_____

We'll be in the Anderson Room, so we can close the door and have all the room and quiet we need. If you're coming straight from work, you can pick up dinner close by to eat during the meeting. (Click here for restaurant list: http://snipurl.com/al...)

$$ As always, this is a NO SALE ZONE, and there is no fee to attend. $$ (Our Sponsor: Visibility Consultants, covers all the costs for you.)

The most important part of the meeting is open networking from 6:30 - 7:00 pm, so make sure you show up on time to make valuable connections. The formal meeting runs from 7:00 - 8:30, with open networking again at the end. Bring plenty of business cards and be prepared to meet some new power partners!

Marketing Materials Table: Bring your flyers, brochures, etc., to share with others.

Directions: The Englewood Library is in the Englewood Civic Center in the area you old-timers will remember as Cinderella City. One block east of Santa Fe on Hampden is Inca. Turn north on Inca, and take the first left into the lower level of the parking structure. The library entrance is on this level. The Anderson Room is in the southwest corner of the library.

Parking: Park your vehicle in the parking structure, and not on the street, so you don't have to worry about getting a parking ticket!

    •  I felt that the SCORE representatives were largely unprepared for their presentation of "Common Small Business Mistakes" as a topic. These representatives are well meaning, experienced business consultants who speak to numerous small groups. The presentation was more extemporaneous than focused. This group would have been better served if the presentation was organized and targeted. The presenters either did not research the demographic of this group or were not informed by the group organizers.
    •  The men from SCORE had a lot of great information to share. We had plenty of time for networking with very supportive people!
    •  Excellent presenation, and good info in SCORE to..it's nice to know that resource exists.
    •  I enjoyed the educational offering. It reinforced what I have read and heard about success in small business. I also picked up some new information. I was motivated to keep moving forward. I was also fun to meet new people. Thanks.
    •  I met several great people tonight. :-)
    •  I disagree with Rob's assessment of the presentation. I believe that the speakers from SCORE did a nice job with their presentation. The first thing that Irv and Rob accomplished was to make our group members aware of the existence of SCORE as a potential resource. That was a good thing. In my eyes, the fact that the presentation was somewhat extemporaneous was a positive. This is a diverse group; our meetings have been attended by accountants, attorneys, chiropractors, construction professionals, film makers, photographers, private investigators, real estate investors, venture capitalists... We're all small business people, but we often deal with different sets of issues and concerns. Bob asked the attendees what we'd like him to cover and he touched on it all. Irv and Bob volunteer their time with SCORE and when I asked, they agreed to speak to our group. I deeply appreciate the fact that they took time out of their own busy lives to share some of their knowledge with us.
