Mt. Evans Summit Star Gazing

This event is very popular; registration opens in the morning of May 28th. Please register  at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6344505587/eorg#

The program begins on the Summit at 10:00pm but we will be asked to get to Echo Lake Lodge (by the USFS fee station) at 8:00pm to check in and organize carpools. We will start driving to the summit at 8:30pm. (We will be sent an email with further instructions closer to the date). The $10 entrance fee to the summit will be waived.

Carpoolers will meet in Wooly Mammoth, Lot AA at 7:00pm to organize carpools to Echo Lodge.

Here is the description of the program:
Join Naturalists, Rangers, and Educators from Jefferson County Open Space, US Forest Service, City of Lakewood, and the Denver Astronomical Society for a very special astronomy program on Mount Evans. Through engaging, hands-on activities learn about our cosmic connections while you peer through telescopes and navigate your way through the night sky.

Registration is required. Ages 10+ only.

Weather/conditions permitting. Rain date is June 29.

Dogs are not permitted.

A special high-elevation program requires some special preparation, please note:

This a late-night program. Check-in starts at 8:30 pm (at the entrance station), and the program will end around 12:30 am. Leaving early is discouraged as this disrupts the on-going viewing activities.

Our programs are designed for individuals & families. If you are part of a group organization, (scout troop, meet-up, etc.) we ask that each family registers seperately. You will not be allowed to register as a large group.

This program takes places at 14,000 feet. A higher elevation means less oxygen in the atmosphere and cold temperatures. You will need to be prepared for winter conditions, and potential difficulties with breathing.

There is an hour long drive from the front gate to the top of the mountain. It is a winding mountain road with no street lights, and possibly patches of snow. Be prepared for a mountain drive at night. We will not be shuttling people to the top.

You will receive important program information in your confirmation e-mail. If you do not have an e-mail address please call[masked] to find out details about the program.

If you are not comfortable with any of these conditions we DO NOT recommend this program.

If space is no longer available, please call Lookout Mountain Nature Center at[masked] to be placed on a waiting list.

Nature did put on a rather amazing display. Thanks to the organizers and to the guides whose enthusiasm was infectious and thanks Tim for driving in the fog. And how often do you get to play Kraken in a skit at 14,000 feet?

I didn't need the winter white-out driving lesson, but the lightening show was spectacular.

I had a skillful fog driver too...what an adventure! Did everyone make down? But it was very mesmerizing. Too bad we didn't see more stars...next time.

What a fun group, skillful fog drivers! I was mesmerized by sunset, lightning, and the septillion stars and planets visible during the times the clouds parted!

Even though we didn't get to see anything through a telescope, it was still a great experience. We were literally up in the clouds- awesome!

Yeah, me too! Meetup and Facebook websites are blocked at work so I couldn't get the website until I got home and got on Meetup. I should have called Petia from work and asked her to email all of us the website but I did not have time at work. Maybe next time....
