With the release of the upcoming sure to be super awesome Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM, I thought it would be equally super awesome to get together and have a night (okay, a day) of watching some of the movies that inspired his love letter to Japanese Kaiju. So to get ready for the PACIFIC RIM meetup the following week, let's get together the week before and watch:
1957's THE MYSTERIANS (Chikyu Boeigun)
A group of aliens come to Earth and ask for a place of their own to live and prosper. Being the nice earthlings we are, we let them. And how do they repay us? By building a giant robot to trash Japan! Bastards need to be taught a lesson now!
Next up we'll drop by the King of the Monsters and watch the original Japanese version of one of the greatest kaiju's of all time: 1968's DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (Kaiju Shoshingeki).
By 1968, the powers that be at Toho Studios felt that Godzilla and his fighting buddies had pretty much worn out their welcome and they were going to stop the series. However, they were going to go out with a bang and brought virtually every monster and creature that had appeared in the previous 8 films together to give The Big G a grand and glorious send off. The resulting movie, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, became one of the most successful and popular films ever released in Japan and those thoughts of mothballing Godzilla pretty much went away.
To wrap up the night, we're going to swing by the Satellite of Love and visit Joel, Tom and Crow for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode: GAMERA VS. GUIRON
Our beloved flying, fire-breathing turtle is back to battle a monster that looks like a shark (that flies) and has a butcher knife for a head. What more could anyone possibly want?
I'm going to start this meetup a little earlier at 1pm since it is Fourth of July weekend and there will no doubt be parties and fireworks displays that people will want to bug out early for. I'll have munchies for the munching and drinks for the drinking. If you'd like to bring to anything to share, feel free but don't feel obligated. However, if you do RSVP and can't make it, please CHANGE your RSVP ASAP so I have an accurate head count. Hope to see you all for some great giant monster fun!
