Sandboarding Trip (Great Sand Dunes)

It’s the middle of summer and you have the itch to ride. BSG has come up with a solution to your midsummer blues. How about strapping on your board and riding the great sand dunes. We will be heading out Friday, July 31st and will be camping overnight, so make sure you bring whatever you will need to camp overnight; sleeping bag, tent, food, water, etc. and hitting the sand dunes all day Saturday, August 1st. This is a trip you will need to be prepared for so make sure that you bring all the items you will need for the weekend. The Oasis campground is right outside the entrance to the Great Sand Dunes. We got a group rate for $5 per person per night. We will have the BSG flag raised at camp site 5 so we will be easy to find. Directions to Oasis Campground can be found here. We will be arriving in to the area Friday evening and camping next to the fire. The following morning we will stage and load up in four-wheel drive vehicles and make the two mile trip up the primitive Medano Road to Castle Creek. You can only access this road with high clearance four wheel drive vehicles. If you have a pickup truck or other 4WD that would be awesome! Medano Road will lead to an area at the Medano creek crossing. This is the extent of the driving portion – no vehicles of any kind are allowed in the Dune boundary (see notes below). Once we cross the creek, we are in front of the highest dunes in the wilderness area. The creek is only a few hundred yards from the base. The creek runs intermittent hour by hour. It is one of the few creeks in the world that has surges or waves a few inches high. More here… No ATV’s, or anytype of Motorcross bikes, dune buggies, etc are allowed to be brought in past the ranger gate, it is a designated wilderness area. Pets have to be on a leash or in a vehicle at all times. Pets are no longer allowed in the dune area. Please see this link for more info: Keep in mind we are in wilderness area – they do not allow radios or broadcast sound. Bring an old board, bindings & boots. The sand will certainly strip any wax you have on a board, so my advice is to bring an old one or pick up a piece of crap board from a thrift store or Play It Again Sports, or steal your roommates. The best wax to use on the dunes is actually 100% Teflon spray – you can find it at any hardware store. If you can’t find an old board to bring, we will surely be able to switch off with others. Bring your standard camping gear, the Oasis is a desert camp ground. Sometimes that area gets wind – but this time of year it should be calm. Some other facts: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve contains the tallest dunes in North America, and cover a distance of thirty square miles.

Anyone need a ride??? Wade, you good? I have a crewcab titan with plenty of room.
Chris-What do you need hauled up? I can take it. Hit me back. I'm grabbin lunch in Denver then headin down on Fri.
There are some good dirt trails down there just not on the NATIONAL MONUMENT itself. Most 4wheel drive can handle it - bikes are best.

I would be down to carpool with whom ever. Either driving or riding. I live in lakewood close to 70 and 6. The less cars the better.

    June 13, 2010

  • Charlie

FIXED: We will be heading out Friday, July 30st and will be camping overnight, so make sure you bring whatever you will need to camp overnight; sleeping bag, tent, food, water, etc. and hitting the sand dunes all day Saturday, July 31st. :p

I got snow tires on my car so I can't take it down there since it will melt the rubber off. Somebody in boulder country area, willing to carpool, hit me up.

    June 1, 2010

  • Chris

not sure. it could, but i am leaning towards project.

    May 12, 2010

  • Chris

Sorry about that brian but we will fix that. We will be leaving on friday but your more than welcome to come either day.

    April 28, 2010

  • Brian

also. the description says july 31, but the event date is set for july 30. fix?

    April 27, 2010

  • Adam

That is why this year I'm renting an actual sandboard!

    April 27, 2010

  • Brian

dude adam. even you were bummed about "sand boarding" at the end of the trip last year. don't you pretend otherwise. now slinging mud on laura and watching people beef the jump were absolutely golden.

    April 27, 2010

  • Chris

I think you should repost the pics from last year. I agree, brian with your board and all i understand why you didnt like it. For me on the other hand i loved it and i got down the hill with no problem.

    April 27, 2010

  • Adam

Hey Bri, maybe this year you should just rent a sandboard instead of trying to make your own with sheet metal, plywood and garden hoses. Hahahaha! Don't make me repost the pictures of that thing!

    April 24, 2010

  • Brian

camping alone was fun enough to warrant going back. the actual sandboarding... not so much.

    April 23, 2010

  • Chris

That is another good point. If people can i would suggest that people car pool. There is plenty of parking but only so much actual parking at the site. The extra parking is just down the road so it is not far at all but ride shares would make it easier.

    April 19, 2010

  • Kimberly

I concur...last year was SOOOOO much fun!!!

    April 19, 2010

  • Kristen

    I have two extra seats......

    April 19, 2010

  • Chris

For anyone who is going to miss this one I would really rethink that. Last year was a blast and this year i think it is only going to be better. Besides the boarding, just hanging out at the camp ground chillin by the fire is a good time.

    April 19, 2010

  • Adam

FYI: We are arriving Friday, camping both Friday, and Saturday night then coming back Sunday.
