Approximately one year ago, we lost one of our own to a Pulmonary Embolism which is a blood clot in the lungs. She had been coming to PQ for over 3 years to Broncos game and was a vibrant, easy-going, young woman who lit up the room when she came in. Always about 10 minutes late to the game with the biggest smile, the biggest hugs and one of Denver's biggest fans. Her last game was Nov 17th 2011 against the Jets. It was a Thursday night game and everyone was Tebowing like crazy to see him come back and win the game. On a personal note, my last communication with her was an email she sent me of a picture she took of me Tebowing on top of the table, I still cannot bring myself to move that email and it will always be saved. Come the 27th, her parents and brother traveled from Colorado to be with Erika in the hospital in which she died during the week of Thanksgiving. Her family came to the bar inform us of the tragic news, instantly shocked and saddened by the news of her passing. In her parents words, the Broncos meetup was something to remind of her of Colorado and a good second family. Something that brought a little piece of home to DC, something to look forward to every year. Fast forward a year and the plaque of John Elway's signed jersey was a generous gift from Mr and Mrs Langhart (Erika's parents) so we always have a way to keep her with us here in DC. So as fantastic as the Jersey is, the meaning behind it is so much more. It represents Erika Langhart and the wonderful, amazing, giving person she was. But it always represents why we come to gather every Sunday. What many people don't understand, (especially Redskins fans), is the meaning behind Broncos Football. What it means to be part of this family, how it transcends beyond just watching a football game. We come together from all different backgrounds to enjoy the common good. So we continue to gather in your honor Erika...thank you for being a part of us.
With that being said, let's discuss this upcoming game against Kansas City and one thing I know many are worried about which is the injury to McGahee. I watched the last game over again after the injury and absolutely encouraged by Lance Ball/Ronnie Hillman combo. McGahee is an every down back which neither Hillman or Ball are BUT it provides an opportunity to create mismatches for defense. Both are excellent pass blockers, but expect Hillman to be much more active in the passing game as a checkdown receiver as well as screen passes. Ball Absolutely has the capability to being a 1-3 yard 3 down back which is the reason he continued to be on the active roster in case McGahee would get tired. Lastly, it would seem moreno is active and the Broncos at this point are not going to bring in another RB. Moreno is in the last year of his contract and for all intensive purposes is a bust but this opportunity may fuel in the following way: He needs a job next year and would like to get paid a decent amount and pick up a back up position. He provides very fresh legs as he's proven he's not a 16 game back, but with 6 games to go, he's very healthy and should be explosive. Finally, Woodyard has gone on record to say Moreno has been lighting up the defense on the scout team, but we shall see.
This game is going to be a blood bath. The Broncos at this point want to continue to take it game by game, but do recognize opportunity to continue to put the AFC on notice. With the win last week, the Broncos have a 3 game lead in the division which is essentially a 4 game lead because we hold the tie breaker. The division can be wrapped up with a win on Sunday and a win next Sunday against the Cleveland. But what its necessary to establish dominance against terrible teams, like New England is doing. What will be tested is the run defense. KC has a fantastic run game, mainly because the passing game is simply awful. Miller and Dumervil have to be very careful in the pass rush to stay patient and recognize the screen as Jamal Charles is an extremely good back. On the flip side, KC's offensive line is in shambles and Dwayne Bowe at this point will be questionable for the game. That being said, it's never easy to play in Arrowhead and every team we are to play is looking to be a spoiler.
Of note, CBS will have a special with Shannon Sharpe this Sunday during their NFL Pre-game show at 12pm, set your DVR. Note the time is 1pm for the game. Hope you all had a great Turkey day with friends and family. See you sunday
