DJ Basix lessons - Followed by John Digweed @ Beta Nightclub

Hey everyone! (this is a long post... please read)

It has been brought to my attention that some of you are interested in jumping behind the decks to see what it's like from the other side. Well this is your chance to dabble a bit. The endgame here is to get some of you spinning to the point where we can start throwing parties of our own featuring some of our own talent. Who’s' in?

NOTE: If this goes well and has some level of interest I plan on doing this on a more regular basis, time permitting. If you are interested I encourage as many of you to come as possible so future sessions can build on each other instead of starting from scratch every time.

I have been DJing for 4 years now and drift between House/Electrohouse/Progressive/Trance for my sets and this will be the base of what I will be teaching. I will say that I do use auto-sync for the main reason that I would rather focus on track selection and set progression than chasing a beat. Also, If you have/will ever catch one of the parties I DJ, you will realize that I spend a lot of time operating my lights... it's a cheap alternative... but does the trick. Either way... you will realize that it still is much more difficult than pressing play. This will be a great way to start.

Lesson:

We will start with breaking down a track into its parts and the basic structure of EDM. After that brief intro I'll get you familiar with the decks, the software, and then we will jump into basic mixing. The goal for the night will be to consistently put two songs together... and that's where you start. I would like to get into my theory behind set progression, song selection etc... but we will get there.

To end the class we will jump to Beta to catch the legendary John Digweed!!! Not only will this give you the opportunity to dance your ass off, but you will begin to hear the transitions and technique that goes on in the booth. Pre-order your tickets now for the cheapest price!

If you can't make the class and just want to dance... that's cool too! Join us at Beta:

1909 Blake St, Denver, CO

Class starts at 7 and we will go till 10ish before we bounce. If there are a lot of people that RSVP I might slide the start time back so we can get as many people behind the decks as possible... so PLEASE RSVP.

Also, bring some cash for some pizza ($5 should more than cover it)... can't spin on an empty stomach. Concerned about that slice killing your Crossfit bod? That's what dancing is for ;-)

Equipment:

Numark Mix Deck

Traktor Pro

a HUGE library of music.

Genre: We will probably start with house and build up to something else depending on you.

See ya'll then!

Hey everyone! The decks are set up and the music is ready. See everyone at 7! Also... I'm putting in the pizza order soon because of the game today. Make sure you bring some $. I was going to order from Tony P's but the total was going to be about $50 for two pizzas... Maybe next time... Papa Johns it is.

If you'd like to check out some of my stuff... here is a Trance mix I have posted on my soundcloud. Pardon the cliche beginning... I built it to spin into someone else's electrohouse set :-P

Do you charge, or is it more of a hang out, talk about mixing kind of thing?

Absolutely no charge! DJing is a love and hobby of mine. I've never made a dime off DJing yet it's brought me joy and lots of friendships... And that's what it's all about... The music and those that love it :-)
