Ride Fruita!

Heading out to Fruita with what will probably be a small group of friends (likely only 2 or 3). If anyone wants to join us, here's the plan:

I'm going to arrive late Thursday night (prob around 8 or 9) and grab a camp site at 18 Rd (hopefully for free).  Ride Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  I'm planning on heading back to Denver around 2ish on Sunday.

These rides will be fun rides with a solid group of riders who are intermediate when it comes to cardio & endurance, and a blend of intermediate to advanced when it comes to technical ability, so if you're out to win some medal you'll probably be bored with us, and if you've got virtually no experience on a mountain bike you'll probably be a little intimidated by some of the stuff we ride. Bearing all that in mind, though, anyone is welcome to join us. We will stop at all intersections to regroup, won't drop people, and will have a great time!

CONTACT: Feel free to call or text if you have any trouble finding places or any questions: (720) 289-7290.  I think cell service at camp is spotty, but I will respond if I have service and get your messages.

CAMPING LOCATION:

We'll try to camp at the PAY CAMPING AREA near the end of 18 Road (GPS coords: [masked], [masked]).  Camping is about $10 per site and the sites have picnic tables and fire rings.  If the paid area is full the backup plan is to camp in the free area (GPS coords that will get you close:[masked], [masked] - There is an obvious trailhead on the west side of the dirt road... the free camping is on the east side of the dirt road - you may not be able to see it from the road since it's behind a hill, but I promise it's there!).

RIDES:

Friday - 10am - Sounds like not too many people will be here for this, but I think we're just going to ride around the trails by the campsite.

Friday - 2:30pm meet at the Tabegauche Trailhead [masked], [masked]).  We'll stick to the Blues and Greens on the map here, since a lot of the other trails are pretty technical and have some exposure that might make some folks a bit uncomfortable.  Map of the area: http://www.copmoba.org/userfiles/files/Lunch%20Loop%201-8-14.pdf

Saturday - 9:30am Ride from Camp on the trails at the book cliffs area.  We will likely ride Prime Cut from Camp and connect to Joe's Ridge, then go back up Prime Cut and come down Kessel's Run, and if we have more time and energy up Prime Cut again and down PBR or Chutes and Ladders.  But there are a TON of trails in this area, so if you want to do something else just let us know.  Map of the trails in this area: http://www.copmoba.org/userfiles/files/18%20Road%201-23-14.pdf

Saturday - 2:30pm meet at the Kokopelli Trailhead [masked], [masked]).  We'll probably ride Mary's Loop, Horsetheif Bench, Steve's Loop, or any combination of these trails depending on how we all feel.  Again, there are a ton of trails in this area, so if you're up for something different just let us know.  Map of the trails in this area: http://www.copmoba.org/userfiles/files/Kokopellis%20Loops%201-17-14.pdf

Sunday - 10:30am meet at the Rabbit Valley TH [masked], [masked]).  NOTE: Later start time this day because this TH is ~45 minutes from camp.  I've only been here once, and had a great time riding the Western Mesa and Arch Loop part of the trail, but I'm open to other suggestions.  Trail Map of the area: http://www.copmoba.org/userfiles/files/Rabbit%20Valley%202-27-14.pdf

Big thanks to Kate for hosting a perfect trip to Fruita. The campsite was awesome, great location, access to facilities and a roaring campfire. Some nutty bartender brought a portable bar and made drinks for us! Ride selection was fantastic, we rode the Lunch Loops in GJ on Friday, Saturday rides of Prime cut, PBR, Joes Ridge and Zippity were super fun, followed by Horsethief Bench in the afternoon. Dipping into the Colorado was a nice way to wake up our feet and legs. Sundays ride at Rabbit Valley was the best! New trails, good times. Thanks to Kate! Good job!

We will be there around 12-1 pm and will scout around for a pay site on the chance one may have opened up. If there is a site with only one tent, and they're cool, often they don't mind adding others. If we find one, we'll nab it and come get you. If not, well, we will build the best firepit mankind ever saw and improvise

Got a camp site in the free area since the paid sites were all full. We're near the north end of the free camping, across the dirt rd from the official trailhead parking at 18 Road. Here's our location via Google maps: Dropped Pin

Sounds good Ben! If anything changes I'll post something here. Otherwise, look for us at the TH. I ride a blue cannondale (not a lefty) and will probably be driving a silver Suzuki.

Directions to 18 Road camp site:
Exit Interstate 70 at Fruita (Exit 19). Head north on Cherry Street and take the first right onto Aspen Avenue. Go through the roundabout and continue on Aspen to Maple Street. Take a left on Maple Street and travel north for approximately 3.6 miles (Maple turns into 17.5 Road.) Take a right on N.3 road and then a left on 18 Road. Travel approximately seven and a half miles north on 18 Road until you reach the North Fruita Desert Campground.

Spoke with BLM today[masked]-3000. Campsites within the campground are $10/night per site, not per person. This is pretty darn cheap when split among the campers as each site can hold 3-4 tents easily.

Kate, I'm not trying to hijack your trip, but I would recommend getting a campsite because of the access to toilets, tables, and most importantly for me, fire-rings, which is the only allowed allowable method to have a campfire. BLM also said that the only free camping is "dispersed camping" which is not allowed in the campground itself. As you drive up 18 Road, when you see the first map board, you have entered the campsite. Thus, free camping is BEFORE you come to that board, which is still about 3/4 mile from the trail head.

Changed the details above to show the rides that we're planning on doing, as well as some good maps of the area. If anyone has suggestions for rides that aren't listed let me know. I'm open to changing the plan! And, if anyone has questions let me know too!

So sorry you guys - you are correct the Desert Rats race is the previous weekend. Based on this information I will be back in Denver doing the Colfax Marathon the weekend you guys will be riding in Fruita. Darn - sorry again for the mix up in dates! Happy trails. :)

Is this a Sat and Sun ride or are you starting on Friday? About how many miles do you expect to ride each day?

I'm planning on getting there Thursday night, but you can show up whenever you can, and join us on whatever rides you want. I'll try to put a loose schedule together as we get closer to the weekend, and I'll post my phone number so people can call/text if necessary.

Mileage will vary. I like to ride in the morning, take a break around lunch, and then ride again in the afternoon. I'm thinking ~10 miles in the morning, and another ~10 miles in the afternoon, but I'm open to doing more or less depending on what the group is interested in doing.

Sorry about the radio silence on this one guys! I wasn't getting notifications. I've updated the event details above with my plans for when I'll get out there, where I'm going to try to set up camp, etc.

Based on the website it looks like the Desert Rats race is the weekend of the 10th... http://www.geminiadventures.com/cycling-events/drclassic/
I don't think there are any races going on the weekend of May 16th, but maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing... If there is a race going on, though, I agree with Debbie. I'd like to avoid the race trails on race day. I don't want to be trampled by racers while trying to have a fun ride!

It is not a huge race so it might just make camping a little more of a challenge. Also, since the race takes place on the kokopelli it may mean that riding Mary’s and Horsetheif bench and such would be best on Saturday so that everyone isn’t trying to fit a nice leisurely ride into a group of hard head racers (LOL) if that makes sense.
Have a great trip! I’ll be out there for the whole weekend so maybe I can hook up with you guys for a ride on one of those days.

Stacey, I don't know about Kate, but I plan to ride Saturday and Sunday, perhaps Friday if I can get there early enough. Debbie, do you think an endurance race on the Kokopelli trail will make camping out at 18 Road difficult? I kind of doubt it, but I haven't heard of this race before

    April 24, 2014

  • Debbie B.

This is the same weekend of the Desert Rats Classic ride which starts at the Parking lot for Rabbit Valley and goes on the Kokopelli trail (race is Saturday 5/17/14), just in case you want to steer clear of that area. Or sign up and do the race! Just so everyone knows, it may make camping areas difficult to find and such.
