Ed Wolfrum will talk about several packages including RODBC, RgoogleMaps, and TwitteR. Implicit to the latter two is the RCurl package which handles http/ftp requests. Possibly more details will follow.

Great introduction in to twitteR and RgoogleMaps. There are all sorts of side projects and wasted weekends ahead for me.

Ed was a charming speaker and addressed the reality that most people work on spreadsheets outside of the cloister of technical departments. He also shared tools he was having fun with, which is why we do this, right? I hope he speaks again.

An informative talk. I'm already having fun with the twitteR package.

The meetup was excellent! It was three mini-talks in one. The RODBC and RgoogleMaps sections were very useful for my own projects. I hadn't considered twitteR analysis before, but Ed presented some interesting ideas for how one might apply it using text mining approaches. I don't mind the re-use of examples found online, as it's a good way to bring them to the attention of the group.

As a former S user, I found it useful to hear about what is being done to read data with R. It is the new ways of reading and managing data that I need to learn to leverage my past experience. That and knock the rust off.

Ed is a great speaker! He was funny, but did a good job of explaining what problems he was trying to solve and how he got to solutions, and what paths didn't work for him. Even though I've used some of this stuff before, I got some new ideas and functions to follow up on. I love the idea of an "R Tip of the Month"!

New to R, so it was nice to have a mix of entry level friendly content and a variety of topics.
