Saguaro Lake Dam-to-Dam Marathon Paddle

Saguaro Lake Dam-to-Dam Marathon Paddle

NOTE: The date has changed to 4/20

We will meet at the Butcher Jones Beach Rec. Area and paddle upstream to the buoy-line at Mormon Flat dam.

NOTE: This is not a casual event and should be considered a marathon paddle. It is a fun paddle and NOT a race. Round trip is about 19 miles. It will require quite a bit of stamina on your part and a proper touring boat. I do not recommend kayaks under 10 feet in length or inflatables. There are not many spots to take breaks along the route. If you have never paddled at least 10 miles before, it would be best to join one of my shorter trips. DO NOT bring any inexperienced paddlers as a guest, please!

Please keep in mind that this is April and the water will still be cold. If you do happen to upset your boat and get wet, hypothermia is a possibility. Hypothermia can kill you. You are welcome to cut your paddle short at any time and return to the launch site, however you must make prior arrangements to return with a buddy. Nobody paddles alone.

You must wear a buckled PFD when on the water. Due to the length of the paddle, please leave your pets at home. Children 11 and over, who are experienced paddlers are welcome.

Please arrive at Butcher Jones before 8:00AM, as we will be on the water at 8:15. The road to Butcher Jones is about 1 mile past the main entrance to the lake.

Here are a couple maps of the area:

Consult Google Maps for driving directions and drive times from your location. Go to:

and put in your location in box “A”. Click “Get Directions”.

You will need a $6 Tonto pass to park your vehicle. You do not need a boat sticker. Passes can be purchased in advance at many locations or online. They are not sold at the beach. Here are some retail locations:

Each paddler is responsible for their own safety. If you upset your boat, hypothermia is a possibility. Event Hosts are volunteers therefore this is not a fee for service event. It is your responsibility to determine if your physical condition and ability are appropriate for the requirements of the event. Please contact the event host if you have any questions.

Does anyone have a hitch for two kayaks that could be attached to a Honda Civic 2005?
