Lower Salt River - Saturday July 6, 2013

Join me as I try to stay upright in my "new to me" whitewater canoe. The thrills  and spills will be worth the price of admission!  I promise!

This trip is beginner friendly, but please no pets or children unable to paddle their own craft. It should not be your first time in a kayak.

We will meet at the Water Users Bus Stop #1 Parking Lot so that the early arrivals can go
ahead and move their boats and gear to the water's edge.
(map and information about the Lower Salt can be found here
http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5208044.pdf

As soon as enough people arrive, we will shuttle vehicles to the take-out
at Phon D Sutton Access Area. One driver will graciously agree to drive the drivers back to
Water Users.
Later arrivals may have to leave their vehicles at Water Users and ride back to their
vehicles after the paddle.

This event requires everyone to wear a PFD
(Personal Flotation Device - life vest - life jacket)
and that no alcoholic beverages be consumed during the float.
NO Exceptions!

A safety briefing will be given prior to launching on our float.
The main topics will cover "What to do if someone tips over!" and
"What to do if I tip over!"
This is for the safety of the group as a whole.

Please bring the following in addition to providing
your own kayak(or canoe), paddle, and PFD.

Tonto Forest Parking Pass per vehicle
(available at Big 5 Sporting Goods or
convenience stores along Power Rd - you must
purchase before arriving at the Water Users Parking Lot they are not
available on site. You do not need the watercraft sticker for canoes and
kayaks)
Sunglasses with safety strap
Sunscreen
Wide-brimmed Hat
at least 2 liters of water if not more
Snacks for a "lunch" stop if desired
Wear clothes that you can get wet
and Footwear should have a heel strap - no flip flops
Optional
A 2nd set of clothes to leave in your vehicle for a dry ride home
a Dry Bag or Waterproof Container for car keys etc

Kayak and Canoe Rentals are NOT available at the Salt River

What a great day and sorry I missed the get together at Red White and Brew. My vehicle just automatically got on the freeway. Hopefully next time you'll do it again. Thanks to everyone for making every trip such a special time. Special thanks to Ron for taking time out of his personal life to get us all together.

Was a great time with new and old members! As usual Ron was the perfect guide and all seem to have fun in on way or another. Our resident photographer Mark did an awesome job at creating beautiful memories and lending out his equipment. Weather was perfectly overcast to the end!

I took a little detour home today by way of REI and expressed my concerns from today - looks like they are going to make it right. It does help to casually mention that our membership is now over 850 - thanks to all of you!

Wow, my first dump in about 5 years, and Desert Mountain Paddlers were on it! Faye scooted up beside me and let me grab her boat, Mike grabbed my boat, put a rope on it and towed it down the rive, and I enjoyed a nice, safe, cool, refreshing, relaxing swim down the river to our lunch spot. Gotta credit Ron for all his safety talks, too. - The PDF was zipped up and everyone knew what to do and when to do it. Great ride down the river today, and Desert Mountain Paddlers even makes dumping turn out to be a good time...but not one to repeat on purpose, of course. Yet a good time when it happens.
