Full Moon Paddle at Saguaro Lake

Terry has Lake Pleasant covered, so let’s do a full moon paddle at Saguaro Lake.

Sunset is 7:34 and moonrise is 5:56. We will be on the water BEFORE 7:30, so don't be late.

We will be staying close to shore as much as possible. If you feel that you might be intimidated being on a dark lake with powerboat wakes at night, maybe you should consider passing on this paddle. If you have never been in a kayak before, this is probably not the paddle for you.

Please leave your dogs at home for this event and no children under 12.

We will be parking and launching at Saguaro Del Norte Facility boat ramp #1, not Butcher Jones beach. Do not park in a space or lot marked Boat Trailer Parking Only, as you will be fined. Due to the small size of the parking lot, I am limiting the number of participants. In fairness to your fellow members, please RSVP only if you are certain you will be attending. Late arrivers will have to drop their boats off near the water, park up on the hill and walk back down.

You do not need the usual red/green bow and white stern lights of a powerboat. All kayaks and canoes are required to have is a lantern or flashlight.

Here’s what AZ Game & Fish says:

“Manually propelled watercraft shall carry a lantern or flashlight showing a light that shall be exhibited in sufficient time to avert collision.”

Flashlights should be waterproof. I use a headband light as well as several chemical light sticks. The more lights you have, the easier it will be for moving powerboats to see you. Be creative! A flashlight will also be helpful when loading your boat in the dark. There are NO LIGHTS in the parking lot and snakes like the warm pavement.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being on this beautiful lake under full moonlight. Early on the waves from boat wakes were a distraction, but by the end, the lake was glassy and the experience serene.

My thanks go to Bob W for organizing this meetup (and so many others!) and to Ron the [Christmas Lights] Canoe Guy for enabling this most useful and active Meetup Group.

If anyone happened to see a piece of plywood with a pvc tube attached and a 2x6 with 2 bar clamps - they would belong to me
not a big loss if you didn't find them but it will save me making another - thanks Ron

Great paddle with nice group. Weather was very nice, and the power boaters were not too bad. Sorry so many of you missed my demonstration of a wet exit, I will try and do another soon.

Is anyone in East Mesa who wants to share a ride? I have an inflatable that easily fits in a trunk or hatch. I'm even thinking anyone who would be willing to meet at the Park and Ride at Power and 202? let me know. [masked]

    Hi David,
I am at Pinnacle Peak and I-17, Will you be traveling by I-17 or Cave Creek & I-101? I have a rack for my kayak. I drive a Honda. If you want to we could travel together. Your truck or my car...makes no difference to me. Let me know.

puneet pal, Yes, you will need to bring a boat, paddle, life vest, parking pass, etc. We do not supply anything. If you are new to kayaking, this is probably not the event for you.

Does anyone have a good local source for bulk glow sticks? I have a great headlight but thinking it might be a good idea to pick up extra glows. Would be happy to split an order with anyone interested. David.

I will be driving in from Cave Creek, CC and Carefree Hwy Area in my extended cab Dodge pickup if anyone wants to carpool. I can carry 2-3 people, no rack but a long pickup bed to stuff kayaks in. Or I would love to park and ride if you have a fuel efficient vehicle and room. I have an inflatable so dont need much space. Always looking to save gas and reduce the carbon footprint. I will be glad to provide the parking permit. David[masked]

Butcher Jones closes at 8PM, so we won't be using it for this event. We will be at the first parking lot as you pass the unmanned entry station. Just look for the kayaks. Headband lights can be bought at any sporting goods store, Target or Walmart and many other stores. Same for chemical lights, which I've also purchased at the dollars stores.

Hi Bob, so not at Butcher Jones... so what are the "land marks" to find the right parking lot/area? Where's best place to buy lights? does target have them?

Hi Bob, Thanks for the information. I wanted to double check... I should be all right then. Last year we kayaked in the ocean with many waves. Thanks again and see you out there. :)

Hi Stacy, My comment was meant for people who have never been in a kayak before. A night paddle on a busy lake is probably not a good place to learn. There are still powerboats on the lake after dark and their converging wakes make spook new paddlers. If the moon is obscured by clouds, you will not be able to see the wakes coming. I don't want to scare anybody away. I just want people to enjoy themselves. If you are comfortable being in a kayak with boat wakes, you should be fine.

When you say: If you have never been in a kayak before, this is probably not the paddle for you. Do you really mean never been in a kayak? Im a beginner and have not been out in a year.. Just bought my first sit on kayak this past weekend. Just wondering if this would be an okay paddle for me to do? Thanks
