AZ Hiking Shack is now taking reservations for this class.
The 1st 10 will be able to attend - the 11 - 15 will have to wait to see if another instructor is available. their number is[masked] - please ask for Dale or Dylan when making your reservation!

AZ Hiking Shack has agreed to offer us a 2 1/2 day "Swimmer Rescue" class on the Lower Salt River.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get some basic instruction in swimmer rescue at an affordable cost on our most used river paddling location.

Our instructor will be Craig Woodman (ACA Level 3 Kayak Certified)  of the AZ Hiking Shack and there will be a student/instructor ratio of 5/1.

The cost is a very reasonable $150 and you will receive a "Certificate of Completeness" upon completion of the course.

This Certificate is recognized by Rescue 3 International as comparable to their Level 1 Course should you want to advance your skills in water safety and rescue.

From the AZ Hiking Shack website:

    In the Office
The weekend begins with a classroom session where terminology, river dynamics, river etiquette and ethics, knots and safety rules will be discussed.

    Out in the field
Time to get wet! Continuing from the Thursday night session, you will get hands on with basic skills and begin some in-river work on rescue, safety swimming and boat handling. There will be a break for lunch and the day will end around 5pm.

    Out in the field
Back at it! Today will be one filled with more boat skills, throwbags, river navigation, and rescue scenarios. There will be a break for lunch and the day will end around 5pm.

May would probably work better for me. I'm healing a mild back injury and *should* be back up to par in May. Thanks for looking into all of this Ron.

Ron - Any chance of pushing it back a week then? Are there enough participants? "It just so happens that this weekend is also the "tour de mesa" bicycle event in which there is heavy traffic on Bush Highway."

Ray - I am waiting for confirmation that we can push this to May 16 - 18 - 19

Okay, that would be great if they will. I've been having pretty bad back issues, so the extra time will do me good too ;)

Looking for an inflatable kayak weighing around 25 to 30 lbs. Either new or used, but I need information on inflatables. I have sold my Hurricane kayak so am in need of finding the right kayak soon.

Myrna - click on the "Discussions" tab and about the 3rd or 4th one down there is a complete discussion about inflatable kayaks.

Are we going to need wet suites for the in water days?

    December 31, 2012

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Mary - I would imagine so - I think Hiking Shack has wet suits for rent. I'll ask the next time I talk to them.

The student instructor ratio will be kept at 5/1. If AZ hiking Shack can only come up with 2 instructors then it will be the 1st 10 who pay who will be able to attend. The limit here on this event page is my way of judging interest. I'm happy to see that there is interest in this important subject! Look for more information after the 1st of the year.
