The 1st Lower Salt River paddle of 2013! - Saturday March 16th

  • Will our dreams come true the second year in a row?  This is 2 weeks later than our 1st Lower Salt River paddle of 2012.

    This event is a great warmup for the upcoming Verde River trips later in the month.

    Flows must be above 500cfs and this should not be your 1st time on moving water. Later in the Spring with higher flows will be a better experience for those of you new to moving water.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    It is time to paddle the Lower Salt River!
    This event is for EXPERIENCED ONLY PLEASE!

    There will be more opportunities in April!

    We will meet at the Water Users Bus Stop #1 Parking Lot so that the early arrivals can go
    ahead and move their boats and gear to the water's edge.

    As soon as enough people arrive, we will shuttle vehicles to the take-out
    at Phon D Sutton Access Area. One driver will graciously agree to drive the drivers back to
    Water Users.
    Later arrivals may have to leave their vehicles at Water Users and ride back to their
    vehicles after the paddle.

    This event requires everyone to wear a PFD
    (Personal Flotation Device - life vest - life jacket)
    and that no alcoholic beverages be consumed during the float.
    NO Exceptions! Please leave your pets and children at home.

    A safety briefing will be given prior to launching on our float.
    The main topics will cover "What to do if someone tips over!" and
    "What to do if I tip over!"
    This is for the safety of the group as a whole.

    Please bring the following in addition to providing
    your own kayak(or canoe), paddle, and PFD.

    Tonto Forest Parking Pass per vehicle
    (available at Big 5 Sporting Goods or
    convenience stores along Power Rd - you must
    purchase before arriving at the Water Users Parking Lot they are not
    available on site. You do not need the watercraft sticker for canoes and
    kayaks)
    Sunglasses with safety strap
    Sunscreen
    Wide-brimmed Hat
    at least 2 liters of water if not more
    Snacks for a "lunch" stop if desired
    Wear clothes that you can get wet
    and Footwear should have a heel strap - no flip flops
    Optional
    A 2nd set of clothes to leave in your vehicle for a dry ride home
    a Dry Bag or Waterproof Container for car keys etc

    Kayak and Canoe Rentals are NOT available at the Salt River

    Event Hosts are volunteers therefore this is not a fee for service event.
    It is your responsibility to determine if your physical condition
    and ability are appropriate for the requirements of the event.

    As of today, the water level hasn't been high enough. We need about 600 cfs for it to be good to go. Anything lower, we will have stuck people. Mar 6th=277cfs, Mar 5th=398cfs

    I had a great time at Alamo Lake. That was one GREAT paddle, the lake was calm and the eagle display was something to have seen. The conversation after dark around the fire was enjoyable.. Need to do more often.
