Gila Box - near Safford

Gila Box - it has a certain ring to it!

23 miles of wilderness river with no way out but downstream!

This spring time run has been on my bucket list for sometime now and I hope you will join me for this "overnight on the river" trip. This is a little late for prime spring runoff season, so be prepared for low water and 2 nights on the river.

Sorry but this trip is not for novice paddlers, at least not this 1st time offered. I have not paddled the Gila Box before so can only go by various trip reports.

Inflatable Kayaks (IKs) will be the preferred craft for this trip.

The carpool/caravan meeting location will be the Burger King / Home Depot lot on Power Road just south of the US 60 in the East Valley at 5:00 AM sharp. If you desire breakfast, adjust your arrival time accordingly.

We will leave the Valley on Friday morning from a East Valley meeting location and "carpool/caravan" to Safford AZ.  This is a 4 hr drive so I hope to be in Safford by 10AM and on the water just after noon.

This is a great resort and you cannot do better for your money. The rooms were spacious and clean. The food was delicious and always fresh. The drinks were not watered down and were always served with a smile. The nightly entertainment shows were great- much more than I ever expected! There is plenty of activities to do at this resort like aqua aerobics.

Thanks for the input Ron...I think I'll take a pass on this trip and hope to catch you on another one where I can use my kayak. Hope you have a great trip and post lots of pictures on the club site...Al

    March 6, 2013

  • Al P.

I'm a new member and haven't done anything with the club yet. I recently bought a 14'6" Old Town Cayuga and want to go on this trip. Is there some reason why I shouldn't use it ?

    March 6, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Al - I have not paddled this stretch of the Gila, and thus my recommendation that paddlers have/rent a tandem Inflatable Kayak (IK) still holds.

      March 6, 2013

  • Ann

Ron, I too went to the AZ hiking shack and was told that you reserved 20 kayaks, 10 singles and 10 doubles? I spoke to Dave and he wanted to know if we were going to need a double kayak so that we would be able to carry our stuff....sleeping bag, tent, food, water? Thanks Ann

    March 2, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Ann - They should now know that you are with DMP and not with the other group. Since this is a self-support trip (no raft carrying kitchen and food) then it is best that you rent a tandem for each paddler. I'll check and see if they rent dry bags as well. Ron

      March 2, 2013

  • Jory

    Hi, Ron-
I need to rent a boat through AZ hiking shack for this trip. They said you may already have boats reserved with them? If so, I need to reserve one of your boats. If I need to reserve an additional boat through AHS, please let me know. Looking forward to it. jb

    March 1, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Jory - az hiking shack was confused as their is another group going out the same weekend - try again!

BTW Ron, I have a handheld GPS, forgot to put it in my RSVP

  • Mike

Ron, which way are we going into Dry Canyon

    February 27, 2013

  • JRiv

I've been on the Gila Box about 7 times over the past 27 years. Some good info on paddleon.net a friends (Gene) website. Likely pretty low water by May

    February 23, 2013

  • Ann

Ron, you mentioned rubber boats are the best... can we rent them ... do you know a good deal buy one??

    February 17, 2013

  • Ann

Inflatable Kayaks (IKs) will be the preferred craft for this trip.

Really wanted to go, but with the date change I can't get off work on a Friday. Hope you all have a blast!

    February 14, 2013

  • Danuta

Sorry the date change eliminated my ability to attend That is the week end of the dragonboat festival in which i heavily participate.

    February 6, 2013

  • Dave G.

    Hey Ron,

Looking at the historical flow rate data, the river looks pretty low in May.

    January 17, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Dave - I read other trip reports saying that 200cfs was their min and as I recall historical data shows it above that. there is no room on the calendar in March and April. the river guy for BLM said that he has done it at 24cfs. It would be nice to get these "expos" and "paddlefests" moved to Feb. :-)

      January 17, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Dave - see comment below about changing to Plan B date of March 22

      February 3, 2013

  • Ron, the Canoe G.

Mark your Calendars - the weekend of March 22 -23 - 24 will be the Plan B date. I will make the decision by mid-Feb and largely depends upon snow showers for the next month.

    Thanks Ron,

My biggest concern is low water and getting to the take-out late Sunday afternoon.

Some of us would then have to drive back to the put-in to pick up vehicles before

starting the long drive back to Phoenix and Prescott. I am considering changing the start date

to Thursday May 2nd. If we have low water then we have the extra day. If we finish Saturday

evening, then there is a campground at the take-out. There is a small fee for the campground as well.

If changing the start date to Thursday causes you to have 2nd thoughts about the trip, please

send me an email or call me. Please also let me know how much lead time you need for an extra day off from work etc.

That's it for now - this will be an adventure!

    All

A couple of house cleaning items

There is a river permit fee of around $3.00 per person payable at the put-in so

be sure and bring some cash.

Fire pan is not required, but if anyone has a fire pan or fire blanket go ahead and

add it to your list of things to bring. I will be bringing a groover for group use, but if you

have one bring it as well due to the group size.

As it stands now, meals are on your own. If someone wants to organize some meals, etc

let me know. There will not be a support raft, so you must be able to haul everything on your

    craft.

I've got a GPS as well and have already downloaded Gene Couch's waypoints... I'm just hoping for decent snowpack now so it's still running in May.

    January 7, 2013

    • Ron, the Canoe G.

Dan - if you can put a waypoint at 1.4 mile from the Old Safford Bridge Put-in - strainer blocking the river - river right is the better side

      January 7, 2013

    • Dan C.

Yes, I'll try to get that put in before the trip.

      January 7, 2013

Hi Ron,..I have a Garmin 60Cx GPS if you need.
