Sketchnoting: Visual Notetaking and Meaning Making

  • Aug 12, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Sketchnoting is a creative way to take notes using typography, page layout, drawings and icons. It exercises one's consciousness of information flow and layout by pushing the note-taker to make design choices, even as they absorb a presentation. This level of engagement and pre-processing also helps with retention and comprehension, and it's quick, easy-to-practice, and reinforces skills and ways of thinking that are fundamental to human-centered design. It also helps you take more useful (and better-looking) notes.

This 2-hour workshop will give you the basics. Make sure to bring whatever you're used to taking notes with - at minimum: a pen and whatever you use to take notes on, like a notebook. Things like pen type and notebook size are less important than the fact that it's what you actually use in real life.

Remember: even if you're reasonably skilled at drawing, there are specific practices associated with sketchnoting that can be a valuable part of your toolset (see articles below - do bring questions!). Of course, don't worry if you're not comfortable drawing - just come open-minded and ready to expand and practice your visual communications skills (after all, taking notes is essential to communicating with your future self).

Instructor Barb Siegel is a visual professional experienced in graphic recording (on the wall), sketchnoting (small moleskine), architecture, design, and education. See her professional page at:

Hooray for drawing! If you loved the visual thinking exercises last night, please join us for the DCGF Graphic Jam and Post-It-Note-Birthday-Bash next week. We'll have repositionable cake and beer...

Ha! Got me again, you dastardly reservation button. I feel as though I'm on Jeopardy.

Weird. It let me click to reserve but then wouldn't let me actually reserve saying it was full.

Yea I got an email saying a spot had opened, but that someone had already reserved it ahead of me, twice. Even though I was only 3 mins behind the second notification. :P

I can't believe I missed an open sport THREE times. Who RSVPs this fast?

Think there's issues with the app. I honestly responded almost instantly when receiving notification. It allowed me to click register but after requiring what I will learn and I a couple words only. Literally 5 seconds. It said full. But was still on 59 members after going down from 60. I think it got stuck accepting me but not competing.

Well hopefully. They'll be an "encore" session seeing how in demand this is.

So it sounds like Toria cannot attend. She said I could have her spot, does anyone know if I can/ should fill something out?

I have a meeting with my summer of design team before, and after the Sketchnoting event, which will cause me to arrive late and leave a little early. If Amanda wants to team with me, and share the slot that would be fine with me

I had a late meeting that going to keep me from getting to attend that was moved this morning, but now it's full. I sure hope something like this will be done again, very intrigued to see the presentation.
