There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

80min documentary directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon.

Enjoyed that one, found myself wondering if I could hold my hand as steady as the sign painters and doubted that I could without a lot more practice... those guys are so skilled. Lots of admiration for the guys painting on wobbly platforms up tall buildings as well - vertigo anyone?!

If any one took a real liking it the movie last night. Letter heads is in New Zealand. It's getting hosted in Te Awamutu this year http://www.letterheads.co.nz/ And Mike Meyer from the movie is a regular and will be over.

Loved the sign painting demo up front and loved the film! Good combo :)
The film's expressive, fire-in-the-belly passionate, expletive-driven, daft-dog-owning, cosmic-ly inspired Sign Painters are an inspiration (aside from that one guy comparing his work to two competitors. I thought he was being a dick about it).

Anyone interested in taking some photos this evening?
It'd be good to send some decent shots to our partner for this event (Design Assembly in Auckland).

Is this on at 7pm or 8pm? This event page and the ticket have different times on them

    September 4, 2013

    • Dave K.

Doh! Our standard 8pm start for this. Cheers Toni.

      September 4, 2013

FYI: This screening may be postponed in order to do a combined screening with Design Assembly of a great film called 'Sign Painters', which we'd be jointly screening in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. I'll let you know how plans develop over the coming weeks. If this goes ahead, Urbanized would just be pushed out by a month or two at most.

    June 13, 2013

    • Dave K.

Psst, the Sign Painters film screening is near enough confirmed instead of Urbanized. Just so you know.
