What's your design background?

When I resumed a career as an editor in the early 1990s, I was attracted to the idea of "desktop publishing." I decided to learn design and in 1996 earned a certificate in Graphic Arts (Printing Technologies) and Graphic Communications (Electronic Publishing) from Laney Community College. I took lots of extra classes in studio art. Feeling the need for more training in current design practices I earned a certificate in Production Art from City College of San Francisco in 1999. While still in school, I became editor / designer of The Work-up, the journal of the East Bay Club of Printing House Craftsmen, which gave me confidence and experience. For several years I designed an annual Solar Energy Resource Guide and various solar home tour booklets. Increasingly I was drawn to helping aspiring authors develop and refine their ideas and present them in print and now in electronic format as well.
