  • This location is shown only to members

We look forward to seeing all of you back at our place in the Grand Ave Mall! Here's what's happening at the Meetup:

Featured Speaker: Tom Giles.  Tom ( @TomGiles) is founder of  StageBloc, a local startup that's built a web platform for the entertainment industry. With Eminem on the client list, StageBloc has made lots of noise and progress! Just as interesting is Tom's journey to launching StageBloc. After a devastating injury and facing years of rehabilitation, Tom focused his energy on teaching himself to code and starting a company. He'll share his amazing story with you.

Idea Share featuring Shindig!

Shindig ( @ShindigPowered), one of the 94Labs ( @94Labs) tech startups, will be on hand to show you what they're working on. Let's support another Wisconsin startup! We might have a few web/design internship opportunities to share as well.

Forward Technology Conference

Speaking of technology and Wisconsin startups, this summer's Forward Technology Conference ( @FWDTech) in Madison runs from August 18 through August 27. Yeah, that's 10 days to hang out with entrepreneurs and technology professionals!

Even though I got there later than I had wanted, there was still free beer and pizza. Yay!

I sat and listened to the speaker for like 20 minutes talk about himself thinking it was going to be relevant to design, technology or startups before leaving. I remember Tom listing off reasons that I should listen to him, "I have a degree in biology, I did every sport as a kid, I broke a bone and got a cast..." I was rather annoyed that nothing he was saying was at all relevant and therefore left.

This was the second out of 3 meetups that I've walked out of. The PerBlue one was the only one where I stayed until the end.

Hey everyone - we didn't get to show this short video recap on tech week in Chicago. HUGE thanks to Jason Gegere and his crew for putting it together in a short amount of time! http://bit.ly/pHh7a2

Group is dynamic. This particular speaker focused a bit too much on past personal issues vs expanding on his experience in his start-up business. While there is a connection, I'd like to hear about wins and losses during the startup phase.

It's exciting to be in one room where there is so much energy I learned a lot from Tom Giles talk about how his life experiences impacted his entrepreneurial journey. It's also exciting to learn about cool tech startups here in the Milwaukee area such as Shindig & StageBloc.

OVerall, the meet-up was very good. However, I had a conflict later in the evning and needed to leave around 7pm. The speaking did not start on time, and the main speaker went long. I had to step out finally at 7:15 and he was barely into the actual meat of his presentation. Shindig was great and I really enjoyed their presetantion. The main speaker was self focused, his presentation was more for him than the audience. Not good.

Excellent venue, and great networking going on. The downsides were that when the DJ started going full blast it became very difficult to carry on conversations, and the speaker seemed to get a little sidetracked during the middle of his presentation leading to the second half being rushed. Awesome idea share though!

Tonight's speakers both had topics of which I have great personal and professional interest. That's what got me down there. For me, I think the music - although awesome DJ - was a bit high for networking. I should be used to it working in a lot of clubs, but it set me back a bit. I would love for both the speakers to have had a bit more time. Dig the idea sharing. All-in-all very nice networking opportunity. I'll be back. I gotta get out of my shell.

Tonight's speaker will be great. Imagine facing a couple years of not being able to walk. What would you do? Tom taught himself to code and started a company. He's an inspiration.
