The G. A. R. Building: Rehabilitating Detroit's Castle

For thirty years, the Grand Army of the Republic Building on Cass and Grand River sat vacant, but that is about to change.  Join us at McShane's to hear Sean Emery of Mindfield USA talk about the rehabilitation of this historic building and how its past is being used to shape its present and future.

For some background on the G. A. R. Building, please check out the recent article in the Detroit News:

Presentation was terrific. A Historical Marker should be there and a Civil War Museum would held us not forget those brave veterans!

Speaker was excellent! Of course, as the owner he knew all, but his presentation was exceptional.

Sean gave an amazing talk about the GAR building and the work his team is doing there. I left impressed with the hard work these guys are doing! It is aweinspiring. They not only are maintaining its historical character but they are honoring the men and women who dedicated their lives to our country. This building will be not just another office building but memorial to our Union soldiers who fought for our country. They are honoring the original agreement that the lower floors remain a marketplace for the community. these guys are a class act! This was the best meet up I've been too. Thanks all!

Just noticing that 257 people have signed up to attend this presentation. Is there space for that many people in McShanes's?

I've been to other Meet-Up groups where there are 10-20 people and I know how complicated it can be for the organizer so I know there can be inbuilt problems and it is a fair roll of the dice that some of the offerings will not be available simply because of the logistics involved. I sympathize with those who get the short end of the stick and it would be nice if there could be some retribution. However I also appreciate all the time and work the organizers do in order to bring off such a large event.

Too bad we cannot tour the place. It's always distressing to see old buildings with worthy architecture being torn down where history could provide thought for future generations. The less they "modernize" the building the better. But I reluctantly understand-money is money after all and is too much of a reality.

Have noticed this building for over 45 years! A ROMANESQUE MASTERPIECE! I saw a short video of the inside recently and "stunning" is just one of the adjectives that I can think of now. Guys behind this project are doing a fantastic job. Stewart

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
