Kayaking Tour of the River Rouge and BYOB Picnic

Approximate 2 hour kayak tour from River Rouge's Belanger Park with Riverside Kayak Connection (RKC). Kayak out to the Detroit River from the park’s boat launch and then upstream to the Rouge River. Highlights of this tour include how Henry Ford changed the route of the Rouge River, paddling around Zug Island, the history of the Marathon Oil refinery, and why Delray is called "Little Hungary". See industrial Detroit like you have never seen it before. RKC will provide the kayak, gear and guide. ***If you RSVP yes, please give RKC a call because they need to get your height and weight info so they bring the proper equipment. RKC can be reached at [masked]-2925.***
The tour costs $47, which includes equipment rental and $2 Paypal service charge. Payment is required immediately when you RSVP yes. The RSVP list will be shut down at 9 PM on July 30th. After that, refunds will not be available. If you would like a refund, please send a message to Melissa, the event organizer, prior to July 30th at 9 PM in addition to changing your RSVP status.
We'll be having a picnic at Belanger Park after the tour. Please bring your own lunch and beverages as food and drinks will not be provided.

Whoops, I signed up a while ago and just now realized we were supposed to call RKC with sizing. Is that going to be a problem?

      I think you'll be okay.

I was hoping to reserve a spot for two this weekend. If someone is going to cancel could you let me know.

@G As the description states, the is a beginner/intermediate tour. RKC will give us instructions before we head out on the water. They will also have a lot of experienced volunteers to help us once we get going.

@Mark - yes, even if it is raining. REC wouldn't take any chances with our safety out on the water.

What if there is a storm? Will there be rescheduling or do we just loose our money if we've signed up for the kayak trip?

    July 16

    • Melissa

You'll be refunded your money. RKC will cancel if the weather is bad. They'll call me if we need to cancel, and I'll email everyone and post it here on Meetup. We can reschedule if RKC has time available in their calendar.

Or even if it's not a full blown storm with lightening, what about heavy rain? I'm new to kayaking. Only did it once before.

@Anna Fleury: Please see the above comment to Debbie. That should cover your question.

Hi! I just joined and this sounds awesome! But if we have our own kayak and paddle and PFD, do we need to pay the full $47? I'd really like to go...

I paid for two people. The additional guest's name is Michael Chandler.

Is the equipment for one person? What skill level is needed for this trip? Sounds wonderful and would love to go.

    May 27

    • Melissa

RKC will provide a one-person kayak. The skill level is beginner/intermediate.

I took a similar tour of the Rouge, starting upriver at Greenfield Rd. It is a different view of those industrial sites, and nice to see life in the river.

Is there a cheaper option for those with their own equipment?

    May 26

    • Debbie M.

Hey Adam, maybe we just show up and paddle?

    • Melissa

It costs $25 if you bring your own equipment. However, you will need to contact RKC beforehand to make sure that your equipment meets their safety standards. I cannot alter the payment amount on an individual basis, so you will need to pay the $47 to reserve a spot and I will refund you the difference.

Hey! Would love to do this. I got my own boat so I don't need to rent. What about that?
