Go on the Lantern Lit Underground Railway Tour.

There are several dates for this tour, but I am planning to go on Saturday evening, September 20th. It begins in Detroit at the Second Baptist Church at the corner of Monroe and Beaubien in Greektown.  Karin Risko, the guide and organizer for Hometown History Tours will lead us along stops on Detroit's Underground Railroad, a very important part of our history. The tour is at least two and a half hours long, so wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately!  We will have dinner beforehand.  You must purchase a ticket to participate; space is limited.

Dana , thank you for organizing and putting up with the 87 posts for this event. I had a great time. Karen and her group did a great job. I would highly recommend the tour to everyone. The after tour saganaki was great and it was nice to relax and talk with the actors. Look forward to future events. And if anyone has a photo of Jim and I with the ladies of the night - please post.

Hey Will, thanks again for giving me a ride to my car! Despite the rain and my sore ankle, I had enjoyed this outing. It was nice to talk with Karen and the actors afterward. I was happy to make some new friends.

Hi new to the group, do I just go to the link for the 27th and purchase will that be my RSVP?

      September 3, 2014

    • Karin R.

Hi Robin, Thanks for your inquiry. For some events, you just RSVP. For this event, however, tickets need to be purchased in advance as there are only 35 spots (28 now remaining). Link enables you to order online.

      September 3, 2014

  • Karin R.

Hi Everyone, We appreciate your response but have to limit space as a walking tour isn't enjoyable with too many people. I did open it to 35 so that is the max for this date. This is the time of year we offer our Notorious 313 True Crime & Tour which takes up my weekends. I do have Sept 27 free. Before I check with church and actors, I'd like to see if there is sufficient interest in adding another date. Please respond if you are available and want to attend on Sept 27. Thank you!

I am able to offer the Sep 27 tour starting at 7 PM. DDHS members get a special rate of $23. You can call[masked] and order tix via credit card or use this link & pay online: https://www.eventbrite...

Updated count. I believe we have one or two spots left. When capacity is reached eventbrite doesn't allow you to sign up for that date.

    1 · August 13, 2014

  • Karin R.

Danielle, I don't think Dana has made determination of restaurant yet. She will post details closer to date of where and when to meet. Usually organizers have some sort of sign or inform restaurant host so that they can direct you to group. Many people have RSVPd but only those with tickets are actually going. You have a ticket so you are included in the count.

  • Danielle F.

Hi! My third time posting. I would really appreciate an answer to my questions? I'm new to this and would like to know the arrangements for meeting. Is the plan to eat first, or is the tour first? I have a ticket, with the number of RSVP's should I try and arrange another date? Please let me know. Thank you!

    August 13, 2014

  • Laura

DUMB question: is any of the tour really underground? I KNOW that "underground" meant "hidden" but some spaces truly were underground, right?! This sounds like a wonderful opportunity but I am claustrophobic so would have to prepare myself. As I type I hear you all thinking "first world problem!" and you are right. Sorry.

    1 · August 11, 2014

    • Karin R.

Good question Laura! The Underground Railroad is figurative as in clandestine or secretive so no we don't walk through underground tunnels as some people think. Also, there is little of this era left so we tell the story through actors at locations where events took place. Since you are claustrophobic (which I'm glad you mentioned), we do go deep into the basement of Second Baptist Church. During this scene, we do close the door slightly and turn out the lights for a few minutes as we perform a reenactment.
