Forgotten Landmarks of Detroit with Dan Austin

Dan Austin is a Corktown resident, author of Forgotten Landmarks of Detroit and creator of the fantastic Detroit history blog, HistoricDetroit.org.

The Detroit News says of Dan's book, this is "a book Detroit has needed for decades. ... Lushly illustrated with historical photographs, this book is a must for anyone interested in architecture, historic preservation or Detroit history." This book is the sequel to "Lost Detroit: Stories Behind the Motor City's Majestic Ruins" and tells the tales behind 15 landmarks that have disappeared from Detroit's skyline. Features more than 100 photos of a different Detroit - a Detroit that many have never seen. From the hallowed halls of Old City Hall to the story behind the city's first skyscraper to the majestic steamship City of Detroit III to the birthplace of the automotive industry, this book gives a glimpse into some of the most stunning places Detroit has ever known.

Come out to McShane's in Corktown to hear Dan's love for the buildings and stories of Detroit and share some cocktails at the historic corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

Also, bring some cash to support a fantastic Detroit historian by picking up a copy or two of his book. It makes a great gift.

A very knowledgeable and witty presentation! Interesting side facts and insights captivated everyone and left me again astounded how easily old buildings are demolished and/ or destroyed- making way for parking lots or utterly ugly buildings which perhaps someone 100 years from now would find beautiful :)

Dan did a great job! Unfortunately, someone broke into my car, damaged the driver's door, and stole my briefcase and laptop from the trunk while I was at the meeting. Did anyone else's car get broken into?

Dan's vast knowledge passion for Detroit history was evident in his presentation. I'm a long time follower of Buildings of Detroit and now Historic Detroit so getting to hear him speak was a treat. Hope he can do another event with DDHS.

Hi! I have four people wanting to join to check out what this club is all about. Is that a problem? I saw that one can only bring two people...

Does anyone know about the parking situation down there? Is there a lot or is it on street only? Thx

    January 14, 2013

    • Chuck

There is a small lot off Elizebeth but most parking is on street. Trumbell, Michigan or Elizebeth. Should be OK with no sporting event.

Hello! We RSVP'd for this event and are really looking forward to it! We are however coming from 45 mins the other side of the border....how many spots are actually available? Just with work schedules and border crossing we want to know how realistic it is to actually get in. Thanks! Appreciate your feedback!

It's a big bar. There will be room for you. Usually, about 30% of the people who RSVP yes aren't able to make it. Look forward to meeting you.
