Re: [Detroit-Drunken-Historical-Society] Should we charge for events?

I don't think, though, a dinner/drinks get-together is an appropriate place to charge fees. Speakers if well-known, no problem. Special events/fundraisers, that's fine.

I also think it is appropriate if (after attending two or three events) to be asked to pay a small membership fee for future events (suggest between $10-$20). You also could do a sliding fee of members versus non-members (maybe non-members pay a small fee for everything).

Where's the "like" button on that thought - Good one Susan!

I agree that charging too much for an event might lead to unrealistic expectations about the event....but I still think a modest fee (where appropriate) is a good idea...if the host is unsure about the event presenter - maybe that could be a "freebie"???

May I suggest you make the fee non-refundable?  Too many headaches dealing with refunds.

Thanks!

Money is a great motivator. A fee would for sure make me remember to attend an event. Seems too many people on Meetups that are free, and who RSVP, most time do not show up or even have the courtesy to change there RSVP to - not going.

I think a modest attendance fee is appropriate....

Hello History Lovers,
We're looking for your help. We have a vision to make Detroit Drunken Historical Society one of the most compelling ways to learn about Detroit history.
So, we are trying to constantly improve our events.
One of the questions we're considering is whether we should charge for events in order to better predict attendance and to guarantee members a spot.
Would you please let us know your thoughts?
