Dinner and a Movie

Some of the best talks on software development have already been given. Let's get together and watch and discuss a great talk from the selection of amazing online content.

Simple Made Easy – In this amazing talk, Rich Hickey (creator of Clojure) teases out the difference between simplicity and ease, exploring things that are simple and how the choice of abstraction can encourage simpler, more maintainable systems. If you haven't seen this one, it's amazing.

Pontificating Quantification – This great talk explores the options and challenges in the space of software verification. From testing to types to proofs, all of the options are brought together in a coherent theoretical framework. Kurt Gödel even makes an appearence.

Runaway Complexity in Big Data, and a Plant to Stop It – In this talk, Twitter's Nathan Marz introduces the Lambda Architecture, which leverages eventually consistent data stores, MapReduce, and complex event processing systems to arrange an elegant trade-off to provide a broadly useful, general solution to the CAP theorem. If you're into big data or distributed systems, this one's for you.

That movie was dense with information (a good thing). I need to watch it twice more to make sure I got it all.

I enjoyed the presentation, and especially everyone's contribution in the accompanying discussion, which greatly helped my understanding of the subject.

I had already seen this talk by Rich Hickey before, but it was fun to watch again, and the discussions we had about it were very interesting.
