Developing for Wearable Technology - Karl Martin & Wesley George, Bionym

Wearable Technology has exploded onto the scene within the past year, and with it, the need for developers who can build applications for this futuristic technology. The team behind the Nymi will discuss both the challenges and rewards of building for wearable technology.

Karl Martin is the co-founder and CEO of Bionym. He is an innovator and entrepreneur, one that is constantly driven to create new things that capture the imagination. He is a recognized expert in biometrics, security, and privacy, having served as an expert witness, and an international speaker on these subjects. He holds a Ph.D in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto, where he was formerly an instructor. Karl has been quoted internationally in several major media outlets, including WIRED, CBC, BBC, New York Times and Time Magazine.

How Big Data will Reshape Communities, Online and Off - Ryan Ovas & James Slifierz, Sproutr

Using technologies that did not exist more than a decade ago, we can now quantifiably understand how ideas and social norms propagate through communities, societies, and the world at large. The research on social physics, a term born out of the MIT Media Lab, is ten years in the making and it has offered incredible insights into the ways human beings interact. Given what we know now, we’ll discuss how we can use this information to bring new efficiencies and opportunities to the systems that govern our everyday lives. We’ll also talk about how this data can restructure societies in a way that gives everyone an equal chance at opportunity and success.

About Ryan Ovas (@ryanovasdesign) & James Slifierz (@jsliverz) Ryan & James are founders of, a collaborative platform for startup communities, which just launched their beta product this March 1. They are both college dropouts passionate about entrepreneurship, online communities, and the meshing of the two. When not working on Sproutr they can be found getting carried away on other crazy tangents like… nevermind, they only work on Sproutr. Also long time DevTO supporters!

Lot's of Hype around wearable tech, Looking forward to hearing from Karl about development tools.

Food for thought...why do developers in startups all seem to create "platforms", who is left to create "products" and "Services"?
