Python Programming for Grades 6 and Up - Morning Session

Python (www.python.org) is used for creating games, websites, and much more. Python is a real programming language used by professionals. We will create several simple text (no graphics) games. Some programming experience is helpful, but not required. You will make much better progress if you can type.

Before class, please set up your laptop as described here: http://davebsoft.com/programming-for-kids/python-class-preparations

Grade 6+ exclusively

Taught by
Dave Briccetti

Media Waiver

• By registering for this meetup event, you are accepting the terms and conditions defined in media waiver.

Requirements

• Each attendee must have a laptop (Linux, Windows or Mac).

• At least 1GB of free disk space. If the laptop only has that much space, highly recommend freeing up some space for a better performance.

• 4GB of RAM would work, but 8GB is recommended. Higher memory will work, of course!

Software Installation

• TBD

Logistics

• Please make sure to bring a water bottle/snacks for the attendees.

• One registration will allow only one kid to participate. Parents are required to stay at the facility for the entire duration of the workspace and may observe from back of the room. There is wifi at the venue and so you may consider bringing your favorite device(s) to stay connected.

• Your meetup fees will cover the cost of a limited edition Devoxx4Kids t-shirt for the attendee.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure to read the media waiver

I really enjoyed teaching your kids today. Do you or they have any questions remaining? I will have office hours Sunday at 4 on Google Hangouts. http://www.meetup.com/Young-Programmers/events/171521432/

Hi, my son is registered for the morning session but I totally forgot about it. Can he come in for the pm one?

    March 15, 2014

    • Nina S.

Yes, please come. There are 2 spots still available in the afternoon session.

    Hi,

My son, Sammy Z, can't go this Saturday so his friend (Christopher Tang, 10th grader) will go and use Sammy's spot.

    Thanks,
    Shuai

    Arun,
I will bring in another kid (Carlos 7th grade). Seems like there is no option to pay for another kid. Can I reserve a seat and pay in person on saturday. We are attending the morning session and there is 1 spot left.

Harpreet, while you sort that out with Arun or Kevin, I lowered the class size by one to save that last space for you.

      Thanks Dave!

      Harpreet,

Please work with Tori at the registration desk.

Hi everyone. Please help me keep this enrollment process simple. I set a requirement of grade 6+, and some of you enrolled kids in earlier grades despite that, and some of those are now emailing me asking me to make an exception. The grade 6+ requirement for this class is hard and fast.

Hi Dave, I am sorry not having noticed the 6th grade requirement when registering. I guess we have to drop him out. His name is Harry Guan, and my meetup id is: Sally (user[masked]) We already paid for the fee, so could we use it to cover other events by you? If not, that's also fine. We appreciate all you guys have done for the kids! thanks a lot!

Hi Sally. I’ve already removed (and continue removing as new ones come in) the unqualified (grade < 6) students. I don’t think the organizers will be giving refunds or credit. As for other events by me, I’m turning my attention for awhile to my own for-profit group based in Lafayette (near Walnut Creek).

    Hi Dave,
I too did not notice the 6th grade requirement during registering:(. My son is 11 years old, a 5th grader, almost a 6th grader:). He is very much interested in learning Python, he was there when you taught Scratch. Please let me know if he has to drop out. Thanks, Shaila.

Hi folks. I’m glad to see the interest in this class. I’m afraid that those of you who missed or disregarded the grade 6+ requirement will have to withdraw. If the class doesn’t fill with kids grade 6 and above, we can consider special cases.

Hi Dave, I registered my daughter before I saw the age range. She is in 4th and was the one with the ponytail who was spoke in the microphone a couple times at the scratch event. Feel free to let my reservation go to someone else, but if there ends up being room please just let me know. Thanks for volunteering your time. Great stuff!

Hi Alvin. This is a beginning Python class, so not for your son.

Sure .in that case, please let me know if the class doesn't get filled by 6th graders;)

Hi Rajni, and everyone. I prefer to fill this class with grades 6 and up. Perhaps if it doesn't fill, we can add some younger kids who perform above their grade level.

Yeah, makes me happy! Christopher has a dentist appointment and we better move this appointment to another day. Python is much more important!!
