Blackmagic Night - the cameras and postproduction kit

Blackmagic design is an Australian company that originally created a range of post-production equipment. The have moved in the last few years into camera equipment by producing 4k cinema cameras significantly cheaper than their rivals, bringing much excitement and anticipation to low budget film-makers around the world.

Richard - Short Demo of Blackmagic Intensity card, (a HDMI capture card), how with this cheap card that you can capture full HD images via camcorders HDMI output, and how you can capture stop motion animation and import into Premiere for editing.

Dariusz - Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 2, The world's first SSD video recorder that lets you record forever! HyperDeck Studio features dual SSD slots and automatically continues recording onto the next SSD when one record disk fills!

Martyn Chalk from Chalkstar films (ChalkStar Films is a Oxford-based video production company specialising in creative, high quality, visual media.) They have a Blackmagic Cinema camera and a Pocket Blackmagic camera they will be showing and taking Q&A. Chalkstar use Premiere, After Effects and FCPX for their post production, and will be showing a couple of short examples made on the cameras including adverts they have created for clients and a music video.

Great turn out of 30. Quite a few new attendees including many local TV professionals.

Richard kicked off with a brief look at how Blackmagic Intensity HDMI capture card can be used in stop motion capture, and edited in Premiere.

Dariusz gave a video presentation on Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio 2, including Photoshop preset for creating live graphics.

Martyn Chalk from Chalkstar films was a great speaker, he not only brought two of his Blackmagic cameras but he also brought his cameraman too so he could answer the very technical questions some of the audience asked. He also showed some of his companies work using the cameras, which they had only had for a few months.

Questions started off on the pro’s and con’s of DSLRs versus Blackmagic, through to post-production workflow, grading and lenses and customisation. The raffle for a years subscription to the Creative Cloud, was won by Luca Koch; and quite a few went to pub afterwards.
