Sterling Hill Mining Museum

• Sterling Hill Mine was suggested as a photo trip by some of our members. The mine is an interesting place to take photographs of phosphorous rocks under UV light. We need at least 10 people to go into the mine as our own group with tripods. The cost is $10.00 each. The mine is in New Jersey but close to the New York border. Visit their website for more information. A tripod is a must if you want to take photographs under the UV light. A remote control will also be helpful but you can use the 2 second self-timer.

Interesting day! Thanks, Jeff for organizing the trip. I saw Mike shooting pics outside for an additional hour. Me, I only stayed 59 mins.

Nice meetup, it was something different, shooting in the "dark" with a tripod. I also found the old equipment outside interesting to photograph as well and stayed nearly an hour after the tour. Thanks for organizing it Jeff.

It's about a hour and fifteen minute drive to the museum from the Newburgh Library (according to Google maps). We haven't made any plans to travel together. If anybody is interested in meeting at the Newburgh library parking lot and car-pooling or driving in a group please let me know. We will have to leave the library no later than 8:30 so I would suggest that we meet at 8am. I have a Blazer that fits 4 very comfortably (5 semi-comfortably) with room for equipment in the back.

If you want to travel as a group from the Newburgh library parking lot please respond to this email or you might miss us. We will leave as soon as everybody who responded arrives or 8:30am, whichever comes first.

PS, it's chilly in the mine so bring a jacket. Bring your tripod. Bring a snack. Bring a camera remote if you have one. Bring a smile.

Nobody responded to this message about meeting in the Library parking lot and riding down together so I am assuming that everybody will meet at the mind in their own vehicles. I hope this assumption is correct. It's an extra hour drive for me if I go to the library first so I will be going straight to the mine.

Hi everybody. I've come down with a nasty cold and I'm really not feeeling up to par. Plus my daughter who was planning to go with me cancelled due to additional time she needs for a project she's working on at college. I really wanted to go but sorry I'll have to decline. I look forward to attending future events and also seeing some photos from Sterling Hill... Thanks for your understanding.

Does the 10am time refer to arrival at Sterling Mine or a rendezvous/departure from Newburgh?

    March 19, 2014

    • Jeff M.

Hi Bill, This is the arrival time at Sterling Hill Mining Museum. We didn't make plans to meet in Newburgh and ride down together although that would be a good idea. The idea was that everybody would go on their own and meet-up at the Museum. If you (or anybody else) would like to meet in Newburgh and drive down together then we should leave there by 8:30am, no later. Let me know.

Sorry, I can't make it on Sunday. Maybe we could reschedule for a Saturday after Easter?

    March 8, 2014

  • Mike It's about 20 miles south of Warwick, NY (Rt. 94/23/517).
I was here before, but not on a tour or in the mine. There are bronze statues and some outside mining equipment to photograph as well.
According to the web site group tours are 2 hours, including 1 hour in the mine, it's 56 degrees in the mine year-round, and group reservations for 10 or more must be made more 2 weeks in advance (March 8).

Thanks for the information, Mike. We only have 7 people signed up. I will call them Friday and let them know that we are coming. We'll still go on this trip even though we have less than 10 people. We may not be able to bring our tripods into the mine. I'm hoping business is slow for them this time of year. and we'll be able to go as our own group even though we are under 10 people.

Is it possible to car pool on this event. If not, may I follow someone there as I am not good at directions. Thanks.

I would consider carpooling. Where do you live?
