Dinner Party Debate: The 1960's!!!

The 1960's changed everything! From mini skirts to Miranda warnings, from psychedelic drugs to the draft, from Woodstock to the Warren Court - this tumultuous and volatile decade is undoubtedly a watershed in the history of morality and the law in America. Those of us who didn't live through the transformation may not even realize the extent to which who and what we are today was determined by a set of moral and legal choices that were made about fifty years ago. That we changed as a people is undeniable - but did we change for the better? For this event we will journey through the Sixties as we examine some of the critical landmark legal cases and decisions that shaped our modern American consciousness. Tie dye, love beads and peace symbols are optional! :o) No particular outside knowledge is necessary and, as always, guests may participate to whatever extent they wish. Let's all rap over a groovy meal and have a really far out time - it'll be a gas!  :o)

RSVP Info.: We have once again reserved a lovely room at Seasons 52 in Orlando (located at the Plaza Venezia). The seating that the restaurant is providing us with is at a premium, so please keep your RSVP's current and only reserve a place if you truly believe that you will be able to attend! As usual, I will be asking everybody with a "yes" RSVP to provide a contact number and I will be calling everyone on the list a day or so before the debate in order to confirm attendance. If I am ultimately unable to reach someone then his or her RSVP will be changed to a "no" and, if there is a waiting list, the open seat will be given to the first person on the list to accept the computer-generated email invitation. Also, please be aware that, because our room may be booked for another event immediately after ours, we will need to be seated in a timely fashion! I hope to see you there! :o)

If you are feeling adventurous, check out this video. I love strange, weird, and otherwise unique perspectives on history, and this is one of the most interesting I've heard. You might not agree with what is said, but as Aristotle once said, "it is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

Christine, I can only thank you again for the fantastic job you do with this meetup.

I have certainly come to understand better how people become entrenched in their political positions. For me it is important to remain flexible and constantly reexamine my own thinking. When given new data, or the passage time of time moves us into new circumstances, I've had to change my mind about a good many of my previous conclusions.

As for the Republican Party, it seems to me that it has been high jacked by Christian fundamentalists. It doesn't seem there is much we can do about true believers. On the other hand, the opposition Democrats, have been highjacked by true believers on the left. The future I see for the US, at this point, is very bleak. Take a look at history to see what happens when true believers go at each other. :(

We had a very lively and thoughtful discussion with great contributions from all sides. I honestly feel like I have a better perspective on the elusive 1960's than I did before. (I thought the debate was just groovy!) :o) Thanks for coming everyone!

Thanks Christine I had a good time. Forgive me if I stressed the war a bit too much, I am just struck by the similarities between then and now. Anyways again, thanks to all the cool people who came, I really enjoyed hearing each person's perspective of the age of the hippies :-)
