Update: January 15, 2013
Who we are and what we are doing:
We are a group of individuals and families who are following the pioneer spirit that founded this great country. We are, as Holly said in her food presentation, concentrating on preparing for the little disasters with high probability. A car goes out of control or an ice storm hits and you have no power for a few days. A hurricane visits and now you need a few weeks. Without power how will you heat and cook? If you cannot leave your current position, what will you eat and drink? If you are at work, how will you go home? What about your family? Areas to consider are: your pockets, your office, your car, and your home or shelter. Some folks worry about “doomsday”, but to quote another member, "I don’t sit awake at night worrying about the end of the world, fluffy bunnies rising up to join the zombie apocalypse."
What we need from you:
We are all volunteers. Some of us are subject matter experts, an example was the event were I created seats in a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Hunter Education class, or when Holly showed food ideas. Young showed his BOB. Holly will be returning with more food ideas. Others are working on solar power and Ham radio. All are looking for helpers. Everybody has a skill, or lacking that, an area of interest for research. We expect each of us to contribute to the knowledge and skills of the group. Sometimes you will “come and watch’, sometimes you will be a helper, occasionally you will be the lead. If you need some guidance, fire off an email to the Organizers.
Photos are required.
We have experienced events where we had trouble linking up because we did not know what the others looked like, and one where we did recognize, based on his photo, a lost new member and bring him into the event. For your comment, I have enclosed the group privacy settings. I think we are sensitive to your concerns, but I would like to hear your opinion. I have about five months of organizer experience, and still have a good bit to learn.
Double your pleasure.
We are associated with Chuck’s other group, Survivalism & Preparedness of Maryland. Dues for one cover both. Dues are forgiven for workers. (If you are not a helper, by definition, we really have no place for you in a Prepper group.) Any concerns or comments should be addressed to me directly through the organizer area of the meetup site until you have my personal hotmail.
V/R, David W

Survival - Prep
ORIGINAL “ABOUT” PAGE
I am starting this group with hopes that others in the area would like to meet regularly to discuss, learn, or train on disaster preparedness and survival skills. I also hope everyone can meet new friends that have the same interests. I know some people believe Preppers are crazy, and I have felt this first hand when talking to co-workers about my Prepper ideas. I thought it would be a great idea to find others in my area who also are preparing for a disaster or others who just want to learn basic survival skills.
Regardless of what disasters you believe may or may not happen, the truth is millions of Americans will not live through a disaster or survival situation without being prepared.
How many of the below items could you do if your life depended on it ?
start a fire in the woods without a lighter or matches
grow your own garden successfully
finding eatable plants in the woods
make a solar oven for cooking
make water drinkable from a river, pond, stream, etc.
can/jar fruits or vegetables
clean and dress a open wound
field dress an animal
make a wind powered generator
setup strong home defense methods
setup and use HAM radios
setup homemade animal traps
These are just some the basic things needed to keep yourself, friends, and family alive. I believe the best way to stay alive is to meet friends who can learn new skills together or train others on the skills you already have. This group is open to beginners and advanced Preppers and Survivalists alike. If you are willing to train others on your knowledge and experience in prepping or survival, I am sure the group would love to learn from you.
