Shoot the Super Moon!! - where ever you are - how ever you want!

  • Jun 22, 2013 · 8:00 PM

Saturday/Sunday brings the Supermoon for 2013. While not a contest - this is just a reminder that this celestial event is happening and an opportunity to share some of your creative or close-up captures of La Luna on this page once your done!!

"Full moon falls on June 23, 2013 at 11:32 UTC (6:32 a.m. CDT in the U.S.). Thus, for many, the moon appears about as full in the June 22 evening sky as it does on the evening of June 23. This full moon is not only the closest and largest full moon of the year. It also presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013. The moon will not be so close again until August, 2014. In other words, it’s not just a supermoon. It’s the closest supermoon of 2013." ~ http://earthsky.org/tonight/is-biggest-and-closest-full-moon-on-june-23-2013-a-supermoon

For tips and tricks - do a quick search online - something like http://photodoto.com/four-basic-tips-for-photographing-the-moon/ should get you started (and give some ideas on other ways to tackle it).

You might also consider catching up with Gary for his Supermoon workshop - http://www.meetup.com/Rhode-Island-Photography-Workshops/events/125219162/ (if you do go - you should be able to poke the moon with that 800mm lens he is offering canon owners a use of).

This will be my first time shooting the moon. I'll go to Sohier Park in York, ME. I'll be using a 300mm lens and maybe an extender.

Im going to use 2 different cameras (and I have no tripod so that will be fun) - but if anyone can answer my slr questions, thatd be great: I cannot find 100iso (which came recommended for moon shots at shutter speed 60 or 30 with f16) and my longest zoom with 0-200 - does this sound kosher? Ill be surprised if I get the shot at all, but its been YEARS since i used my slr - any other suggestions?

Its a pentax SLR - I just cant find the film - and it appears my digital MAY be uncooperative under the limited settings; I have one more store to invade then I give up for iso200

      In some Nikon DSLR's LO1 stands for ISO100, LO2 for ISO125 and LO3 for ISO160.

Anyone going to take photos of the moon at Beavertail State Park tonight? I'm coming from Central MA and don't know a good place to take photos of the moon in R.I.

I was going there but I see other people going to Jamestown Marina, so I will probably go there. Might stop at Narragansett Cafe for something to eat first.

Is the Jamestown Marina called Conanicut Marine on
20 Narragansett Ave, Jamestown, RI. I don't know Jamestown at all and I hope I don't get lost. I'm using mapquest.com and my GPS. I get the internet on my phone so I'll look at the Meetup.com and see if anyone respond to my message.

I'll be on the Jamestown side of the Pell Bridge on Sunday night. There is a dock right there in town to get the Pell Bridge in my frame.

Yes, I agree with Kathy. The area right on the Conanicut Marina in Jamestown (which faces the Newport bridge) is my favorite spot to see the great big moons. And a sensational photo opportunity. I hope we can meet there.

I'm planning on being there. The tough thing I found last time with the supermoon is that it rises really fast and it was a challenge - but it was beautiful. If I mess up Saturday night, I'll try again sunday.

I haven't shot the moon as yet, I do have a new 300 zoom but have a terrible tripod! No luck with pics using that zoom either.
It takes acquired handling I guess. I'll give it a shot, 1st time for everything!
