The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is at Miller Outdoor Theater!, Free

rotator_TUTS2014.jpg

It’s all big songs and big hair in this sassy, spirited musical about a real-life brothel in Texas. Based on the “Chicken Ranch”, the infamous, long-running house of ill repute, this tongue-in-cheek story chronicles Miss Mona Stangley, a classy yet brassy madam with a heart of gold, as her “business” becomes the center of a media controversy.

Thrusting the Chicken Ranch into the spotlight is Melvin P. Thorpe, a loud-mouthed reporter based on Houston’s own late Marvin Zindler.  Spicing up the story line is a hot-headed, trigger-happy town sheriff, the Texas A&M football team, and Miss Mona’s racy girls. The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas is a feisty, fun-filled treat.  It’s “just one small thrill but there’s nothin’ dirty going on!”

For those new to Miller Outdoor Theater--event is free with grassy hill and free-ticketed amphitheater seatings.   On popular events, ticketed seats are taken, but we won't know till after arrival.  Even the hill might be densely populated, so look for the tall hockey stick marker.

Free parking is available in the Houston Zoo  parking lot.  Museum of Natural History has paid parking.   If Zoo Parking lot is filled, I've always found free parking on S. Main near Medical Center (be careful though).

If the ground is wet (e.g. rain previous), many members bring chairs, and chances are the group will have a subgroup on the chair side of the hill.   If ground is dry, let's sit on the blanket side (please bring blanket).

Chen, Event Organizer, will be on hill near 7PM.    It would be great if others showed up early as well.   At 7:30PM, we will decide whether to try to get tickets or not.    At 8PM, we will further decide whether to try to attain open seating.

Chen's phone number is 281 eight 04 six 246, but it is sometimes difficult to hear rings when noisy.   His smartphone's Internet hub is out of action, but usually some member will post updates.

Look for hockey stick.

I didn't get her name but thanks to the thoughtful lady who brought the big blue tarp in the chair section; gave us the opportunity to sit on the ground once in a while. least I could do is help her fold it.

I'd like to thank her too. Additionally, that was an impressively large tarp.

Ha! I'm willing to bet I'm your age or older. I'll be there... With a camp chair. Come on out! I'll even take the ground and let you have my chair.

My cartoon looks haven't aged a bit in 40 years. I keep it in greyt tone.

      July 19

  • Sandi

I'll be there around 6:45 with a rather large blue tarp we can use to mark our territory

    2 · July 19

  • Chen Sun, W.

We'll see if this new technique for holding space will work. I'll bring different color of ropes and try to partition off. We might want more rope, so if you have some additional and plan to come early, please bring.

5PM-- 0% precipation is forecast for all afternoon and evening. Can't be better. Unlikely to need chairs--bring blankets so we can be more together. Odds of getting amphitheater seats are, my guess--also close to 0%. So, bring blankets. Please come early to help hold space. Last time I had to send numerous dirty looks back to those who constantly invaded our territory. :)

  • Chen Sun, W.

    2PM--
Forecast at 8PM showtime is 10% precipitation, which is outstanding. 6PM shows 40%, so there's a chance the ground will be damp. Please bring tarp or optionally folding chair. My tarp has a hole, but we can still use it (not too wet). If you don't see rain at 6PM, blankets will be good. Also, with so many signups, we will need some to show up early--to secure our areas. I'll be there at 7PM.

I don't post using a smartphone, if need to reach me, call 281 eight 04 six 246. Others in the group will be monitoring this Meetup online.

I'll bet someone here can tell us about the Chicken Ranch too. Any Longhorns or Aggies in this group?

    1 · July 18

  • Chen Sun, W.

How many here have met Marvin Zindler, the real-life sheriff of this play?

    July 18

  • Retta A.

I have one of the coins they used to pay with, think I will bring to show and tell LOL
we are probably not going to be on hill but will try to get tickets to sit under pavilion but may bring our chairs just in case, I do not like sitting on blankets anymore, oh and about Marvin Zindler, I had a dinner for 12 with him as our guest and he stood me up, so I never bought anything else with him involved.

    • Chen Sun, W.

He's awful (funny). Stood you up and shut down an entertainment center :)

      July 18

    • Chen Sun, W.

How are you going to get tickets?

      July 18

  • Chen Sun, W.

Hi Laurie, you'll see the tall hockey stick on the hill.
Meetupers, please come early and help secure the area, so we can be up close. Thanks!

Where will we meet? And how will we be able to identify the group if we're "newbies"?

Events at the Miller Outdoor Theater are a LOT of fun. I hope the rain will have ended by Saturday night. I like to park at the MFA, which is just two blocks away.

  • Johnny

I'm a maybe but gonna try to make this one...

    July 13

  • Chen Sun, W.

More on street parking, if zoo parking filled-- on Main Street, across from Rice U, there's usually street parking. It's then a long walk.

    June 15

  • Chen Sun, W.

Normally, Miller Outdoor Theater has plenty of nearby parking at the zoo. However, for popular events at this, parking may become challenging. I believe there's a Metro train station nearby for remote parking . My recommendation--come park early and bring a picnic basket. The show starts at 8 or 8:15; I'll be there at 7.

  • John R.

    Is there parking?

    June 14

Will we meet near the funny statue on the hill first?
