Candlelight Ceremony and Processional with Dick Van Dyke

The Candlelight Ceremony and Processional is a very beautiful and much-beloved Disneyland tradition, featuring chorales singing holiday songs and a celebrity narrator who acts as the master of ceremonies and tells the Christmas story. This year, Candlelight is being held at Disneyland from December 1 to December 20.

This Meetup is to go watch the Candlelight Ceremony and Processional on Thursday, December 13. The featured narrator that day is Dick Van Dyke. The last time that Dick Van Dyke narrated Candlelight was in 1965, the year before Walt Disney passed away. So Dick Van Dyke was the last narrator that Walt saw perform at Candlelight.

The Ceremony takes place in Town Square. The chorales and the narrator will be standing on bleachers arranged on the steps leading up to the Main Street train station.

The show lasts about 2 hours, and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. We will be meeting at 3:00 to try and secure a place for the group. The meeting place is in front of the fire station doors next to City Hall. If you have trouble finding the group you can call me on my cell at (714)[masked] when you arrive and I'll tell you where we are.

We will not have seating, and a large crowd is expected, so we may be standing for a long time. It may be cold that night, so please dress appropriately. You may also wish to bring opera glasses or binoculars to be able to get a close-up view.

Disneyland is scheduled to close at 10:00 p.m., so there should be time for us to get a meal together or go on rides after the show. Let us know what you would like to do in the "comments" section below.

Awasome! Watching both shows @ 5:30 and 7:30 was incredible! I was watching some you tube videos of earlier days and it does not compare being there LIVE! The clarity of the voices was good. Happy Birthday for Dick Van Dyke - a real class guy. Also, thanks to everyone for standing in line waiting. It was worth it. I may go again on Sunday or next Wednesday/Thursday.

It's raining "cats & dogs" here in Murrieta and doesn't look like it will be clearing soon. I just don't feel comfortable driving that distance in the rain. Sorry, but I'll have to pass on tonight's show :(
    Catch you next time :)

The show is only about an hour long, depending how fast everything lines up and if everything goes to plan.

found this video of the last 6 minutes of the 12/12 7:30 processional. There was a brief interruption due to light rain and it turned out to be quite entertaining.

Can you clarify the meeting place? Is it in front of the firestation doors by City Hall, or in front of the Opera House? It's my first event, so I haven't met you all yet. Looking forward to knowing where all these places are. :-) Thanks!

    December 12, 2012

    • Rob H.

The original Meetup place is in front of the fire station, although once we've assembled we may choose a different viewing location.

Keep an eye on the weather for any signs of moisture tonight they put us on a weather hold for about 10 to 15 minutes and then cancel the show and it was on Miss Teen out the musical instruments are so highly tuned they cannot handle the weather or any kind of moisturizer for long periods

    December 12, 2012

I won't be off until 3pm tomorrow is it okay if I show up a little late? I should be able to make it before the show starts.

    December 12, 2012

    • Alan

Yes. That's fine. We will likely be in front of the opera house.

      December 12, 2012

At the usual spot. In front of Opera House.

Dick is scheduled to perform on Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th. Right now, according to the wunderground weather website, there is a 20% chance of rain on Wednesday and a 30% chance of rain on Thursday. Usually, in Southern California, this means no rain. But, as discussed in this comment section, there will be people from our group there both nights. If you want to play it safe, watch the weather closely and collect the phone numbers from this section to be able to check on the night you decide to attend and see who is there and where they are. My phone is (714)[masked]

    December 10, 2012

    • Rob H.

And today it's showing a 40% chance of rain on Wednesday and 0% chance of rain on Thursday. I guess we'll just have to see what happens.

If raining or just misting, will cancel, orchastra instruments too valuable to get wet. Did my second one tonight, awesome again.

question for you - looks as if it will be raining Thursday night... they won't cancel it will they? I don't mind the rain as long as they still have it!

Alan and I will be there Wednesday night for both shows. Give us a call if you go. I won't be there till about 3 or 4. My #[masked], Alan's #[masked]-6762. Will also be there Thursday.

I was too chicken to say more than two tickets, I felt like the lower the number, the more likely I was to get picked. Where is the "stage"? I've never seen it before and don't know what to expect. Thanks, Joanne

    1 · December 7, 2012

    • Alan

The stage is the Main Street train station. Seating is Town Square. Standing is surrounding the seating all around the square.
Since you have tickets, you will go to the ticket booth #4, the south east booth. There you will receive a wrist band. Bands come in different colors and that tells you/CMs where you should be queued and seated. You then enter the turnstiles as usual and get directed to where to queue.

great information Alan, thank you so much!

6 of us watched Kurt Russell on Wednesday. We didn't have seats but were close to rope behind Emporium. About 10 minutes before th 5:30 performance, the CM asked if people wanted seats (only about 3/4 of the seats were taken). So the six of us got seats and watched Kurt Russell, it was another amazing performance. I did win seats for the 18th, 7:30 performance with Molly Ringwold, and amazing my friend also won for same date/time. So between us, 8 seats of which 3 are taken, well actuall 5 if including winners, so think might have 3 slots for this performance.

    2 · December 7, 2012

    • Alan

I have been given a seat every night! Just standing at the ropes with the unticketed.

I received my approval for Monday, Dec. 3rd at 5:30pm. Kurt Russell is narrating.

I will plan to join those of you who come out on the 13th, to (hopefully) get standing space together to see Mr. Van Dyke... he was my strong 2nd choice.

Did anyone get a voucher for Tuesday Dec 4 for 7:30?

    1 · November 25, 2012

Wow, seems like only about 1 out of 10 were winners.

      November 27, 2012

    • Silvia M.

      @Alan, i was afraid of that, thanks. : /

      November 27, 2012

  • Nann P.

    I did not get it....sad

    November 26, 2012

  • Rob H.

Hi Nann, it is a little crazy, but it should be doable. The challenge is that there will be a large crowd of adults standing and watching the show. If the boys are at the back of the crowd they won't be able to see a thing. HOWEVER, if you guys come early and stake out a place towards the top of the ramp leading up to the side of City Hall then they should be high enough to see over the crowds' heads. That's my best advice right now, before we actually get there and can check out the situation that day.

    1 · November 15, 2012

    • Nann P.

I have them often stand up in the stroller...maybe we will score seats....you never know.

      November 15, 2012

  • Rob H.

I was given the 2 hour time for the show by a cast member last week, but I have heard that the time for the show may actually be more like 45 minutes.
