Newbie Night: Intro to Python and Django, everyone welcome!

Intro to Django

Overview:

We will be having a newbie night, everyone is welcome. We will have an intro of Python and Django and go over all the basics, and there will be Django veterans there to answer your questions. If you bring your laptop with you, we will even help you install python and django on your machine so that you can follow along, and continue playing at home.

Where?

Think Tank on Congress St in downtown Portland Maine.

Who should attend?

Anyone who wants to know more about Python or Django. All ages are welcome

No prior experience with Python or Django required, but it would be helpful if you have some previous programming experience with another language.

We encourage the regular folks to bring a friend who has never programmed with Django or Python before and wants to learn.

What should you bring?

Notebook to take notes, and if you want to follow along or need help installing python and Django on your laptop, bring you laptop along. There is WiFi available.

Topics we will try to cover

  • Intro to python and how to install on your machine
  • What is Django
  • How to install Django
  • Setting up a project
  • Using Pip and virtualENV to configure your environment and manage dependencies.
  • Configuring the Django Settings file
  • Forms
  • Views
  • Models
  • Templates
  • Django Admin

Food and Drink:

Because we want to make this open to all ages, we will not be having Beer at this meeting.

Base36 has agreed to sponsor the meeting and provide Pizza for everyone! If you do not plan on eating, or you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know before the meeting.

Raffle:

Everyone who attends the meeting will be entered into a raffle to win some cool swag.

RSVP:

We will be capping the number of RSVP's to the first 30, so sign up quickly to make sure you reserve a spot. If you don't make the first 30, add your name to the waiting list. If there are enough people on the waiting list we will see if we can find more room for everyone.

Will there be some sort of after-event? I'm an experienced django dev, so I don't want to take the last slot away from a learner, but I'd like to meet some people.

Not sure yet, but I'm open to ideas.. Bill don't worry about taking the spot, if we need more space, we can figure out a way.
