Docker Meetup in Boston

Hello,

We'd like you to join us for the first Docker Meetup in Boston. We'll be going over Docker basics in order to familiarize those new to the software, as well as exploring how people are utilizing Docker in their development and production environments. Ken Cochrane, a site reliability engineer at dotCloud, will be giving a Docker 101 walk-through.

We'll keep this fairly informal for our first gathering, as we explore what people are looking to get out of Docker. We encourage you to bring your laptops so we can tinker with ideas and installations both old and new.

If anyone would like to give a lightning talk on how they're using Docker in their environment, please get in touch with one of the organizers. If you have any particular problems or avenues of interest you'd like to explore, please feel free to get the ball rolling in the comments.

Where :: BrightCove's offices at 290 Congress St, Boston, MA (Street View)

When :: Tuesday, September 24th, 2013  7-9PM

What :: All things Docker!

Food: Pizza and Drinks (Soda, water, etc) will be provided. Sponsored by dotCloud.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 24th!

    Hey everyone, I did the lightning talk at the meetup! I figured out the source of my MySQL database closing issue. I was committing my container to an image before stopping it, which meant there was no opportunity for SIGTERM or anything else before state was saved.

    It was great seeing everyone last night. Here are my slides from last night. https://speakerdeck.com/kencochrane/ken-cochranes-docker-boston-docker-101-talk

    Hey Ken - great intro to Docker! Next time I want to see you eat the great deficit! :P Can you post your slides when you get a chance?

    Hi guys it was CoreOS.com - They're making a really minimalist OS that basically seems dedicated to running docker-based solutions in clusters - "Linux kernel + systemd that's about it" says their site (plus their own etcd for service discovery and distributed config).

    I talked with Brightcove, and we decided to increase the number of people who can attend this meetup, so that everyone on the waiting list can go. Hope to see everyone tomorrow night.

    I've been using Docker in testing to create snapshots of each test and to allow tests to depend on other tests' Docker images. I work at a lab at Harvard medical which uses a PHP app to do analysis of mass spec results for peptides and proteins. I can do a lightning talk about this if anyone's interested

      Yes I can prepare some slides. However my train is due to arrive from NYC at 6:30 so there's a chance I might be late

      September 21, 2013

    • Ken C.

      George, If you are a late that is fine, I will be going first, and we will be mingling / eating at the beginning of the meeting, so that should buy you some time.

    In case anyone hasn't seen yet, Red Hat and DotCloud made a big joint announcement about working together. I've been involved in that from the Fedora side and would be happy to answer any questions about that. (I can talk about RHEL/CentOS too.)

      Thanks for offering this Matthew. I am interested in hearing more about this and how it will affect development process

    My only concern with rakspace credit was that they were asking for my credit card info which m not comfortable sharing if I am signing for free stuff

    There is currently a waiting list for this meetup. If you have previously signed up, and now can't go, please change your RSVP to not attending so the folks on the waiting list can take your spot. Thank you.

      Oh, sorry to hear that. Maybe next time.

      September 20, 2013

      James, if you can't make it, can you be sure to change your RSVP so that people on the waiting list can attend?

    First meet-up, I don't know Docker yet and would love to get some feedbacks from people using it!

    Proposed talk: Application containers and Linux capabilities.

    Acquia Cloud is a PaaS that hosts customer-provided code. We offer a free tier, and are greatly concerned about the security of what is ultimately free shared hosting. I'll describe the solution we devised based on application containers and the Linux capabilities(7) system to prevent security vulnerabilities even if customers manage to gain root access.

    We use LXC, not Docker, because we're specifically running application containers, not system containers, but the talk should be interesting to anyone using containers in general.

    • Barry J.

      I figure between content and questions, my Containers and Capabilities talk will be 30 minutes.

      August 8, 2013

    • Ken C.

      Barry, Just so you know, the "default primary intent" of Docker is to run what you are calling application containers, but Docker also allows system containers for those who want them. Basically it is flexible enough to handle both cases. If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know, or we can talk at the meetup.

    Acquia can host the September 25 meetup in our office at 18 Corporate Drive, Burlington, MA (near the Burlington mall). We will also provide pizza and beverages for everyone. We can handle at least 50 people, probably more (I've never counted the max capacity of our training room).

      Barry, Thank you for the offer, we have a space lined up for the first meeting already, but we will keep you in mind for future ones, if the offer is still available.

    Gazelle would be open to hosting this in our space. We're located in South Boston near South Station: http://goo.gl/maps/FV3m3 . We can accommodate about 70 people.

    Like Barry, we are interested in VM security too. We've been using Linux Vserver, but it's not supported on Debian any more and our understanding (and we're not hard core Linux guys) is that LXC is not secure (nor fully functional) yet....
