Book discussion: World War Z

Join us for an afternoon discussion of our next book, World War Z by Max Brooks. Old and new members are welcome! If you haven't read the book, you're still welcome to attend, meet other group members, and participation in the selection of our next few books.

We'll meet at Ancora Coffee near the Capitol. We'll be picking out our next few books, so please feel free to bring a suggestion of a personal favorite or something you'd like to try.

Following the book discussion, we'll have a viewing of the 2013 movie World War Z for anyone who's interested, at a location within walking distance of Ancora. There will be additional discussion and/or dinner nearby after the film!

We'll also be selecting our next several books. Here's the list of nominees (nominations are now closed):

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein

Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver (or another B. Kingsolver book - perhaps Animal, Vegetable, Miracle?)

Game of Thrones Book 1 by George R.R. Martin

Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

A Tale from the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

The Time of Our Singing by Robert Powers

Hey everyone ~ It was great meeting you all today! I look forward to future book club discussions! Part of the reason I joined this Meetup (aside from being a bibliophile) was to make some new friends, and it seems like you are a group of interesting, thoughtful people who would be cool to get to know! Out of curiosity, does this group ever meet in between book discussions, or have interest in doing so? Thanks again for letting me join you!

No one's taken the initiative to do this yet, Kristen, but I think it's a great idea!

Sarah - I would actually be happy to try to organize something like that. Are there any special rules about organizing events on Meetup.com that I need to know? Or would this be best done through a discussion topic?

I'm so disappointed I had to miss yesterday's meeting, with bonus movie showing. Sounds like it was great. It seems as though the next 3 books were chosen yesterday. Could someone please post what was selected and for which month?

Thanks, and looking forward to seeing many of you in March.

The amazingly amazing bookclub got all the more amazing! Really enjoyed the discussion, the movie and the discussion post the movie. Hats off to Sarah for everything and really appreciate the creativity behind the screen setup as well

Thanks so much for hosting, Sarah, great experience!

Kirsten, I'd definitely be up for intra-book get-togethers.

    Hi all,
I'm getting stuff set up for the movie viewing and may not be able to make it to Ancora early to grab a table. If anyone else feels like going early and staking out some seats, that would be awesome!

Wasn't able to read this book, but I'd like to vote for the next if possible (in this order): A Tale from the Time Being, Strangers in a Strange Land, and Game of Thrones Book 1. Hope to make the next event!

Sorry we'll miss you this time, Mallika! If you want to pass on to me your top two picks from the list of nominees, I'll make sure they're counted when we're picking our next few books.

I'm toying with the idea of setting up a viewing of World War Z (the Brad Pitt film) following the book discussion, and maybe dinner afterwards. If you're interested, post here or send me a message to let me know!

I don't want to be a buzzkill but I will warn you that the movie is almost completely unrelated to the book. As a movie standing on its own, it's not half bad. But in comparison to WWZ, it has a totally different plot and conclusion and very few similar characters. Still worth it if you are just interested in the comparison.

I have read the book and I've seen the movie and I agree, they have only their titles in common. I also enjoyed the both.
I'm glad they are different, movie versions of books never work anyway.
      Looking forward to this. =)
