Salastina Music Society & KUSC's Brian Lauritzen: May 11 at 7:15pm, Zipper Hall

I'd like to suggest a Meetup similar to the one we had for our last concert!

On May 11, we're presenting Arnold Schoenberg's ultra-romantic "Transfigured Night" in its original version for string sextet. We often think of Schoenberg as the pioneer of the atonal, twelve-tone system, but in his younger days he attempted to reconcile the romanticism of both Brahms and Wagner in this beautiful depiction of Richard Dehmel's poem about transformational love! The romantic musical language is sophisticated, but completely approachable and understandable even on first hearing. This concert is part of our Masterpiece Discovery series, in which we give our audience a guided tour through a masterpiece of the chamber music repertoire. KUSC radio host Brian Lauritzen, recently profiled in the LA Times as the “youthful, unorthodox laid-back evangelist of the classical radio world,” will speak about the piece and act as our tour guide.

As previous meetup members can tell you, our concerts are intimate events with more audience interaction than is usual. The concert will be held at a beautiful venue at the Colburn School (across the street from Disney Hall) called Zipper Hall.

As before, we'd like to suggest a meetup during our sound check before the concert. We'll open the hall at 7:15pm only to people who tell the usher they're here "for the meetup". We can introduce ourselves (and guest artists) to each other, and you're welcome to sit in on the final part of our prep. We'd also like to offer the discounted price of $15 online advance tickets (regular is $35). Just use the code: MEETUP (all caps) during the purchase process.

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to thank all of you for coming out! It was lovely meeting you, and we hope you enjoyed the event. Thank you for the kind comments!
We were hoping to chat with more of you at the reception, but it took us some time to close down the hall and get over to the Omni. Apologies if you waited for a while.
I'll be posting up a meetup for our next event soon. It will be at Colburn again, but at a much more intimate space called Thayer Hall. Hope to see you there!

There is a big difference between hearing a piece of music and understanding it. In this single performance with the interspersed explanations by B. Lauritzen I came closer to understanding and appreciating the "Verklärte Nacht" than through all the combined performances I attended previously. That the ensemble is of superb quality goes without saying. I thoroughly enjoyed this evening.

Unfortunately I will no longer be able to make this meetup. I hope to attend a future performance, and to meet you in person, Kevin. Thanks for setting it up.

To answer a few questions that have come up:
We'll meet inside Zipper Hall at 7:15pm. Usher will let you in if you mention Classical meetup - once a good number of us are there, we'll introduce ourselves and the musicians!
Tickets: Since the purchase code seems to be a little confusing for some, you can buy your ticket at Will Call in the lobby. Just mention Meetup and you'll get the discounted $15 ticket.

I was not able to get the special rate ticket last evening! May be because it was too late? However, I can not attend this performance. I hope there will be another some times soon.

    Hi everyone,
If you're scared by the name Arnold Schoenberg because of "atonal" associations with it...this is one of his very early works, a product of Late German Romanticism. It's incredibly lyrical and beautiful music.
We're in mid-rehearsal, and everyone sounds amazing! It's not often that one hears the original sextet version of this work, so we encourage you to come if possible. Also, you'll have a chance to meet Brian Lauritzen (KUSC Radio Host) before and after the concert.

I am going to assume photography is not allowed inside the hall. Just wanted to confirm...

    April 3, 2013

    • Kevin K.

Hi Hsu - photography during the performance isn't allowed, mainly because it can disturb the performers or the audience members. You're welcome to take pictures before the concert or afterwards!

I should be able to make it, barring any last minute changes.
