Pathfinder Society Character Creation Cheat Sheet

Character Creation in PFS

Character creation in the Pathfinder Society is a little different from standard Pathfinder character creation. Here's a quick rundown of the differences; for more info, check out the (free to download) pdf of the PFS Guide to Organized Play here.

  • Item creation is not legal in the Pathfinder Society. If you've taken levels in a class that grants an item creation feat like Scribe Scroll as part of your normal class features, it will be swapped out for an alternate class feature (for example, in the case of Wizard, you'll get Spell Focus for free instead of Scribe Scroll; in the case of Alchemist, add the Extra Bombs class feature instead of Brew Potion). This also applies to creating items with the Craft skill. You can still put ranks in the craft skill and use it for your Day Job check, however, or to substitute for a related knowledge check.
  • Use the point-buy system for setting your ability scores. Instead of the usual d6 rolling to choose your stats, use the point-buy system. Start with a 10 in each score, then spend your points according to the table below.
  • Every character starts with 150 gp, regardless of class. SPEND THOSE GOLDS
  • Antipaladin is not a legal class for Pathfinder Society. Do not take levels of Antipaladin. You will not be allowed to play that character.
  • Evil characters are not allowed in the Pathfinder Society. Neutral is fine, but do not build an evil character. Characters found to be committing overtly evil acts on a regular basis will be discharged from Society play.
  • Each character in Pathfinder Society may choose 2 traits. Each trait must be from a different category. Once your character has chosen a faction within the society, the category "campaign traits" becomes available; each faction has traits specific to it from which you can choose.
  • For a more detailed list of the classes, feats, and traits that are legal for Pathfinder Society play, check out the Additional Resources List.

Ability Score Point Costs
7 = -4
8 = -2
9 = -1
10 = 0
11 = 1
12 = 2
13 = 3
14 = 5
15 = 7
16 = 10
17 = 13
18 = 17

You will start with 20 points to spend; as you can see by the chart, choosing a stat below 10 will give you back additional points to spend. You cannot give your character starting statistics below 7 or above 18 before racial modifiers, but if you give an elf a DEX of 18 for example, you'll start with a DEX of 20 after racial modifiers.

Other than these rules, character creation functions as outlined in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook: choose your race and class, pick your first-level feat, buy equipment and choose traits, and you're ready to go. Hopefully this cheat sheet makes life a little easier!
