Drum for Joy Drum Circle at the Temple of Light

Winnie Rafael will be co-hosting our drum circles! Welcome, Winnie!

There'll be a banner above the door saying "Temple of Light." Parking is plentiful nearby. You may come a little earlier at 6:45 if you'd like an introduction to playing technique.

Pam Nishikawa and Winnie Rafael invite both non-drummers and experienced drummers to our drum circle!

What is a drum circle?

A drum circle is a group of people who play percussion instruments together by listening to each other, creating a cohesive sound. Some may choose to play a simple one-beat rhythm, others will opt for more complex rhythms. All of these beats meld together to complement each other. That is where the magic happens! You may dance, stand, or sit while playing...or just dance!

What can you expect at our circles?

A brief overview is given - how to sit, hold the drum, hand positions, and how to play in the circle. We start with some stretching, then do a simple grounding exercise to get us all "in our bodies." We then play a simple rhythm for a bit to get attuned to each other. This also gives us a chance to warm up and play a little faster - then we'll see where we go from there! We'll create our own rhythms, and play some W. African and Middle Eastern rhythms too. Bring a rhythm you know and like to the circle - it's about seeing what we can do in the moment.

Some drums of varying sizes and tones are provided (djembes, doumbeks, Tibetan bowls, bass drums) as well as percussion toys such as shakers, clave, bells, and tambourines.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
