Philosophy @ the Elephant & Castle

When's that damn organizer going to organize another event? Oh, that's, how about the Elephant and Castle again?

NOTE: 7:30 pm start time. Pushed it back so they can get the room prepared between reservations.

Special topic - in addition to the general open-themed discussions, this is a specific subject or question which a small subset of us will be discussing. It's not mandatory, and anyone can join in, however this group will be attempting to stay roughly on topic for most of the evening. This Friday's topic (adapted from the suggestion of a new member- thanks, Drue!) will be Brain Science and Dualism, What What?

Is neuroscience giving dualism a run for its money? What's this "soul" thing, anyway? Can it be quantified or defined? What do we even mean by "mind"? Or do revelations about the physical substance of brain activity not have anything to do with philosophical concerns about Consciousness™? HOW CAN A ROBOT UNDERSTAND CHINESE???

I'll probably be "leading" the conversation again whenever I get there, by which I mean asking some questions to initiate the conversation and then just talking a lot. Or you guys can start without me and I'll join in. Hey, btw, beyond suggesting topics, if anyone wants to commit to introducing/leading one of these special topic discussions, just message me and we can talk about it.

Boilerplate: For anyone totally new - For the most part the group doesn't have any specific topic or moderation, it's just a bunch of drunk, very smart people talking about random philosophical stuff, so it basically runs itself. Just show up, sit down wherever there's a free seat, and join in (Also, feel free to move around over the course of the evening. There tend to be five or six different conversations going on at once, and it can often be interesting to see what other people are talking about). I made a reservation under the name Michael S, as usual. Just ask the waitstaff to direct you to us.

Regrets. was looking forward to this week, but was called away from Seattle. Next time. At least you'll know this time that it was "NOT "good to see you"." But note this does equal "Not good to see you."

Joseph, what happened to cause all that chair throwing? Did those people suddenly discover that those chairs lacked sufficient chair-ness?

I'm just glad to wake up with a reasonable veil of ignorance and splash some water on my face.
