Once upon a time there was a small village located close to a mine. The villagers left their home every day to the mine from early morning, worked there the whole day and returned home on sun set, feeding themselves from the fruits and vegetables they gathered in their way. At night, in the darkness, they sat on the rocks, gazing to the sky full of starts.Watching all those pale lights, static, boring, twinkling in their own positions waiting for something to happen. And that moment was coming. Suddenly, shooting starts appeared and the villagers were becoming exited, jumping here and there, singing and making wishes for happiness. They razed their hands following the stars path with their fingers while others started to play throwing stones towards the stars and counting them. After a while, the villagers decided to simulate the star hunting to continue their adventures during long cloudy winter nights. They marked an area with four stones on the corners, everyone taking some stones as their own stars and played with them. They called their game Tulla Impulla: Tulla means four and Impulla means stones.
Ages passed and the entire world went through massive evolution of history, religion, science, philosophy, technology and art. Human beings changed. And they changed their environment. Metropolis were raised, spaceships were launched and today we know Tulla Impulla as Twilight Imperium 3.
You may not realise it, but we are living in the middle of a Board Game Renaissance.
Beyond mass-market titles of some commercial games, a community of independent designers and publishers has been steadily producing innovative, exciting and beautiful games offering experiences beyond even those of the most sophisticated gaming hardware. Just to give a few examples: In The Settlers of Catan, players compete to colonize an island, building settlements, laying down roads and trading goods to build the most powerful faction. Pandemic casts players as a team of medics attempting to rid the planet of four deadly and highly infectious diseases. Dead of Winter challenges a group of survivors to stay alive in a world overrun by flesh-eating zombies.
There is a game for everyone.
