Dubai Wine Club Meetup

Looks like lots of people have signed up so I have arranged with Vintage to host Thursday 18 July tasting without KC and Catherine.

Obviously start time is moved to 8 pm due to Ramadan. Tickets 150 at the door only.

The format will be a little different for this tasting. On arrival you will get 6 wine glass tags, which will get you a glass of each of the 6 wines. Erica has gone deep into her cellar and has found some great choices. There will tables and snacks set out so it will be more interactive, stand up at high tables set-up. No tables of 10. But, keep track of your favorites- so Erica can tally the votes.

Should be a fun night - too bad I am travelling and going to miss it! :(

More details to follow!

Best!  KC and Cat.

For the people who attended to the blind tasting. A short review of the night:
When 72 people METUP at Vintage@Wafi for a blind tasting, all the members of the group know; anything can happen and often does, we ran out of wine due to a late increased in number of attendees, although, we tried to compensate the shortness offering, once we finished the blind tasting, a different wine. "Cune Reserva, DOC Rioja" and "Montes Merlot" Chile, you would love it Kevin, they were fantastic! Again my apologies for the lack of wine due to the late increased in numbers and the short notice of attendees, it was impossible to provide more.
We poured all wines blind and unveiled them at the end. The tasting was just phenomenal, and nearly every wine was interesting, complex and good for starting conversations. The challenge was served. Canopies were served as well, which mainly worked with the whites we tasted. Chef David did a great job.

Though I had particularly fun tasting the new style of Pinot Noir from Bourgogne. I have always been amazed for this variety of grape. Pinot is a strange and sometimes unpredictable animal – ever evolving between clean pure red fruit to earthy to even a flat out dirty wine. It is that Pinot complexity and unpredictability that attracts me and I would guessed so many others to the variety? Sadly, this Pinot was as bad as the bad ones are. We didn’t find the gem.

Moving forward, the winners of the night were two classic wines from two classical different regions. These iconic wines have become the expression of timeless in form. “Dourthe La Terrase de la Garde”, AOC Pessac Leognac, France and “Marques de Caceres Reserva”, DOC Rioja, Spain. Unanimously voted by everybody as the most popular of the evening, the majority of the guest enjoyed them more or less but everybody understood and appreciated them. For me, the most essential is the distinction from "belonging" or "nationalism". It is the way I understand "terroir". Without terroir, there is no individuality, no tolerance and no shared of culture. We could travel in space but also to the place where they were produced in a way that it was unique. In fact, wine is an immeasurable agent of memory.

It was a good evening but unfortunately the measures were less than what we are used to. But company was good as normal.

The event was definitely not up to the usual standards. For all those who attended for the first time, try again. Kevin will be back next month, and the event will be back to its terrific standard.

At the risk of being a party pooper, there was a value-for-money issue with last night's event. The tasting wine was dispensed in such small measures that we were through it in 45 minutes (and that included a bit of queuing). Then we were buying wine from the venue, which was nice for them but it made the whole event a less-than-satisfactory experience compared with the usual Wine Club events (which are routinely very good). I believe the small-measures issue was to do with a late influx of attendees. I understand this, but while I saw a reduction in the amount of wine we were given, I didn't see a reduction in entry price. That aside, it was a nice evening - the company was, as ever, top quality.
