The Dublin Lockout

Pádraig Yeates, author of Lockout: Dublin 1913 will give a lecture on The Dublin Lockout.

The lecture is part of the NLI’s BiblioFiles series. The series provides a platform for writers, academics and others who have used the NLI's facilities to talk about their research and other work they have carried out at the library.

This lecture is being organised conjunction with the NLI exhibition The Dublin Lockout (August 2013 – March 2014).

This is an evening event, so I hope even more people will be able to enjoy a meetup. I will, as per usual, hang about the main entrance, trying to look approachable, with long dark hair, dark glasses. Jennifer, 0879616576.

The Dublin Lockout was very informative , I learnt details about James Connolly and Jim Larkin that I had not realised .

I enjoyed the lecture despite lack of sleep and I enjoyed even more questions and answers - the lecturer certainly knew his onions. What makes a difference in such events for listeners is not to limit yourself to reading notes in a monotonous tone and this common malaise of academics has been avoided. The second important thing is not to overload listeners with information and this has also been brilliantly achieved; as a result I was able to absorb the important data which I retained in my memory, like the weekly expenses of an average worker in Dublin in 1913 (amazingly, less than 30% of the weekly expenses of an unskilled worker was rent - 2s 6d for rent and 2s for fuel, light and heating, out of 18s of a weekly salary - this figure for me was 46% in 2006 for the cheapest room - so not a whole flat for the entire family - available in Dublin as a relatively skilled worker! - and their expenses did not seem to have include taxes! - is this progress?

Sorry for the late notice - I tried to change my RSVP today in work when I knew I wouldn't make it and it wouldn't let me - I think the job might have had some block on it or something? Anyhow, sorry I can't make this tonight as I was looking forward to it but something has come up that I need to do instead :( enjoy everyone

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
