A real treat in store for a pre-booked guided tour for our history group on Sunday. Let's meet @ 3pm for coffee/snack in the lovely coffee shop, Silk Road Cafe, inside the library on ground floor. Our private tour kicks off at 4pm for an hour, €3per person payable at reception. If you can't meet for coffee then please meet at reception desk for 4pm. Just announce that you are with Mary from the History Meetup group. The library is in the grounds of Dublin Castle so you can enter at main gates on Dame St (facing Olympia Theatre) or the rear entrance. We visited the library on Culture night but was self guided for us and very busy so this opportunity is perfect for us to get acquainted with the library's treasures.
Chester Beatty library is described by the Lonely Planet as not just the best museum in Ireland, but one of the best in Europe. As the only museum in Ireland to win 'European Museum of the Year', the library's rich collections from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe open a window on the artistic treasures of the great cultures and religions of the world.
Manuscripts, miniature paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and decorative arts complete this amazing collection - all the result of the collecting activities of one man - Sir Alfred Chester Beatty [masked]). Egyptian papyrus texts, beautifully illuminated copies of the Qur'an, the Bible, European medieval and renaissance manuscripts are among the highlights on display. In its diversity, the collection captures much of the richness of human creative expression from about 2700 BC to the present day.
Look forward to seeing you for coffee at 3-4pm or at start of tour at 4pm at reception desk in library. Do not book yourself on any other tour as the museum ... You will only cause confusion.
